  1. a question posed on BBC radio2 yesterday was "what effect would there be if the world rotated the opposite direction ?"

the pundit who replied was very vague really, he said about the sun rising in the west etc, but no mention whatsoever of the weather.

I think the effects on the weather would be a major climate changing factor, either turning us into an arctic region or a desert depending what happened in the atlantic which seems to be the major influence on our climate.

What do you think would happen to UK weather ?

Hi Verglas. Interesting hypothesis. The coriolis effect would be reversed. therefore in the northern hemisphere movement of air around low pressure would be clockwise, and around high pressure anti-clockwise. In addition weather systems would have a tendency to move east to west. The net result would be a climate similar to the east coast of the eurasian or north american landmasses at the same latitude. What the effect would be on ocean circulation I'm not sure. Probably a similar effect.

Another effect might well be changes in the Earth's magnetic field.

  2. As a sage once said, there are lies, there are damn lies, and there are statistics! We've seen deeper snow on occasions even in the past 10 years, and lower absolute temps, but its the length of the winter so far that is remarkable.

Whatever the arguments, this winter so far has in certain ways up here reminded me of the New England winter. Over there what normally happens is that the ground starts to freeze from about mid November onwards, so any snow that falls thereafter stays, even with the occasional milder interlude. Thats why the snowpack persists for 4 to 5 months.

Here the ground froze early in December, layers of snow built up (recorded over 2ft level at one stage early new year), and despite brief interludes, the snowpack easily absorbed the rain. The ground remained, and still remains, frozen under the fresh snowcover of the last few days. We have now had 7 weeks of continuous snow cover in our garden. Whatever the statistics say, the spell has been quite remarkable.

  3. LOL, you probably made the same comments before the reload in early Jan, i find it strange people dismiss or forget the cold charts from last night but suddenly believe the runs this morning, more flips to come me thinks :cc_confused:

Sorry Eugene, but I thought this was a discussion of the models, not of what isn't there, otherwise maybe you should be posting on a 'guess the synoptics' thread!. There is no real evidence, If there is, show it rather than mock.

And to set the record straight, no I didn't...

  4. The GFS has taken an awful lot of stick from many members on here recently for its tendency to be too progressive, but it was the first to pick up on the breakdown when all other models showed the block holding firm over the UK, and despite the straw clutching of many in terms of reloads/beast from the east, there is no evidence that this will happen in the reliable, or even at all.

  5. Some oranges appearing in the Scandi high too, showing the strength of the block. The GFS is oft criticised for going into default mode in FI (although I'm not sure if that's a strength or a weakness), but on this run it takes it almost to the end of the run before it can manage that. Remarkable agreement at last between the models, giving a high degree of confidence until possibly up to 10 days out. Thereafter who knows, but with 53cm of level snow here at the moment, even if there's not another flake (which there certainly will be) this is just stunning...

  6. OK, just measured level lying snow in centre of sheltered lawn. 53cm (21" in old money)! And still bucketing too. Models in good agreement for more snow, Late Mon/Tues looking like a strong possibility, and severe cold towards the weekend to throw into the mix. How much news has there been on it? Sweet FA as far as I can tell, even in Scotland!

  7. sorry john my stupidity! of course what i meant is mid - late janruary still on for severe cold as originally predicted?

I don't want to be presumptious and speak for GP (and I applaud his technical knowledge which I can only aspire to in my dreams!!), but I don't read that into his post. I think he is priming us for a warm February, which given the snowpack that exists up here just now may lead to some pretty serious flooding if combined with rainfall.

Mid-late Jan looks good for continued blocking in the Iceland/S Greenland area with a trough over Scandinavia, which would mean a continued feed of air of Polar/Arctic origin.

  8. Taking a rest from model watching for couple of weeks. Will take this pub run with me though! Mild never quite makes it this far north, with a rapid reload and some real wintry weather throughout. Also seems to dovetail with Stewart's thoughts on the way the picture is panning out, so it may have some truth to it.

  9. Pub run well is drunk and ecm 12 oz is considerintg the pub and is sayingt good bye cold very rapidly. I think we need a few more runs.

Think you've joined them, hic... :p

Anyway, we can't knock the GFS for spotting a mild end to the month while congratulating it for spotting the current cold blast from about 2 weeks away. Caveat to that is that I broadly agree it is being too progressive given what I've read from GP's posts on the tech discussion. Some surprises likely over next few days methinks.

  10. im not going to attack you.

but you need to lighten up my friend because this is a rare event and its only mid december we still have jan feb to go yet remember last feb well i had snow here on the sunny southcoast did not last long couple of day but overall last winter was cold.

not extreme cold but good enough this year could be even better.

the cold could well stick around ofcoarse it will warm up from time to time but with so much cold bottled up in europe and up north its looking like fingers crossed winter 09/10 could become very exciting indeed.

and thats coming from the numpty that refused to listen to people that know there stuff and i called a mild stormy winter i could well be wrong i am this month.

so cheers up and i agree the model watching and downgrades get me wound up and there are a few that will ignore the good to find the bad that really does wind me up.:whistling:

Sorry, I thought this was the WHINING THREAD?? If it is, why would PP need to 'lighten up????' Plenty of room for that on the ramping or model moods threads...my friend!

  11. Snow melted, ice gone, now mild and windy. On a personal level, just got my redundancy notice, my 17 year old son is in borstal, my daughter's on the game, my wife is having an affair with my best friend. Still, just before the bailiffs arrive to take away my laptop, I'll cheer myself up with a quick look at the GFS 12z. I'm sure it will only reinforce the beast from the east shown on the last 3 runs.

  12. 3 Run in a row including last nights 18z , then the 2 today , and it 1st showed this 2days ago in the 18z which was blown out the water the next morning , only to show its face again last night , i said last night if we got another 3 runs the same its on to somethin , iv never saw them handsome charts in the 2yrs model watchin iv done, just ones thats been posted from past winters like 1963 , im exited now iv got to be honest , its comin for xmas like the winter forecast suggest , netweather, TheWeatherOutlook, and the chap in America, (iv 4gotton what he was on sorry lol) have all gone for extensive northern blocking this winter and it seems to me its finaly materialising cold.gifcold.gifcold.gif

Right Mods, do we have ramper's corner open, and in anticipation of it all going ti#s up for the 12z onwards, the reappearance of whingeing corner???

  13. And here we go again! GFS has bipolar disorder at the moment, certainly making manic depressives out of many on here. Although we've seen eye candy in FI many times before, there does seem to be much more persistence in the appearance of these types of scenario recently. Maybe, just maybe... Anyway, off to stock up on supplies now!!!
