  1. Thanks Yeti, lovely photos. :D

I love Edinburgh too, not been for a few years but hope to go again soon.

Please can anyone say what this tower is called, been to the top, lovely views of Princes Street / Gardens.

The buildings are so beautiful in Edinburgh every view is a photo opportunity.

That's the Scott Monument in memory of Sir Walter Scott (:

  2. LOL! Was the fire alarm going off? Every single time I've been in DHT the fire alarm has gone off

Just stay out of Appelton Tower.

Love the photos, I was down Tram Chaos Street way today and it was amazing again summer feels like its back.

Haha no fire alarms, but yes Princes Street is somewhat... transformed! I wish they had a few more crossing points :cold:

The McEwan Hall was pretty impressive.

  3. Nice pics, Yeti. Was the view from the Camera Obscura good? :D

I didn't go up it! Last time I went up the Scott Monument, which has great views, and yesterday I went up the David Hume Tower of the University which is very high and has nice views :)

It's such an amazing place though, it's a case of one day just not being enough!

  4. Some pics from yesterday of my favourite city! :D

  5. It's amazing how my skin just seems to turn chocolate in no time and I can only remember actual burning on singular occasions - one was at 2000m in Austria during 2003, for example (in Spain I have problems though).

The sun has very little effect on some people who neither burn nor tan, whilst others just frazzle. I think this picture of me and my brother highlights this difference perfectly! (Austria last summer).

  6. Perhaps, we got 10C here but it was just my location its usually warmer than surrounding areas. Your best bet is with SWly high pressure (and mine too)

Yes you are near the coast whereas I'm inland and at 185m so you would expect it to be a good 1c colder than the Vale of York - however it was a lot warmer! The Pennines are to my immediate W. Although I don't think a SW'ly is the best direction - the hills simply aren't high enough despite the airmass being better. A straight W'ly or NW'ly drags the air across 600-900m hills rather than 400-600.

  7. I'll bear that one in mind next time the SW'ly blows :winky:

I think I had foehn today. At one point the temp reached 12.3 when W of the Pennines it was 6-8; 64% humidity and much warmer than pretty much anywhere else in the UK - also sunny, with a huge, abrupt bank of cloud to the W. Sounds like it could have been to me, I was amazed at how high the temp got!

  8. Indeed Hawarden often gets the warmest conditions in Wales due to the foehn effect.

Over the coinitent the foehn effect is associated with very dry air, so I imagine this can effect people with breathing type problems, of course it can also cause rapid snow melt over the Alps, so this also make it unpopular for some.

Apparently suicide rates rise by 10% when Foehn blows. Known for migraines and psychosis!

  9. I was reading about this and that temps can rise 20 to 30 degrees in a matter of hours,

dose anybody know the fastest change in temps during a fohn event?

    Read J07's earlier post!

Loma, Montana boasts as having the most extreme recorded temperature change in a 24-hour period. On January 15, 1972, the temperature rose from −54 °F (-48 °C) to 49 °F (9 °C), a 103 °F (57 °C) change in temperature; a dramatic example of the regional Chinook wind in action.

The Black Hills of South Dakota are home to the world's fastest recorded rise in temperature. On January 22, 1943, at about 7:30am MST, the temperature in Spearfish, South Dakota was -4 °F (-20 °C). The chinook kicked in, and two minutes later the temperature was +45 °F (7 °C). The 49 degree (27 °C) rise in two minutes set a world record that is still on the books. By 9:00am, the temperature had risen to 54 °F (12 °C). Suddenly, the chinook died down and the temperature tumbled back to -4 °F. The 58 degree drop took only 27 minutes.

  10. Wow, it seems like I may have a foehn effect today! Current temp 11.1 and rising (nearest observations five to eight); humidity 68% and DP 5.4 with these two dropping fast! There is also a huge, sudden bank of cloud to my W although this could be anything. Could it be!?

  11. The best places to see foehn in the UK, in terms of effects, are Aberdeenshire and the Helm Wind off Cross Fell in the Pennines, where a classic "Helm Bar" forms:

    helm%20bar-s.jpg

This also explains why Aberdeen has the highest maximum ever recorded in January, of over 18c. I occasionally get foehn here although I don't remember it ever happening in summer; however I can remember a straight westerly occasionally giving 15c+ temps with below 10 to the W of the Pennines. Unfortunately though, 700m just isn't quite high enough for it to happen regularly and lapse rates etc. need to be pretty steep.

  12. Here are the winners:

    3.9C: jimben

    3.9C: Pete tattum

    4.0C: Jack Wales

    4.0C: davehsug

    4.1C: Stargazer

    4.1C: V for Very Cold

    4.1C: Supercell

    4.2C: Summer Blizzard

    4.2C Snowsure

    4.3C: High Ground Birmingham

Well done to V for very cold, Stargazer and supercell :)

  13. Ditto, I have been using the WZ charts since Dec 2004 and just become very used to them. The colours are different on the N-W charts with the upper air temps and I prefer the WZ ones. No doubt i'll get a telling off from Paul for that :) I do use the N-W charts but only for short term forecasting and precip positions. When i'm looking between T36+ I tend to look at the WZ ones.

Just on a side note... I posted a chart about 20 minutes ago saying that it looked decent for my Birthday, well the interesting thing is... For the past few years it has been pretty snowy or cold around my Birthday. When I turned 18 it snowed overnight and when I woke up there was snow on the ground in the morning. I think last year it snowed on the 5th aswell or defanitly around the 5th. I think it might have snowed when I turned 17 aswell, can't really remember though. It looks like it could be another potentially snowy Birthday again this year! I wouldn't usually have expected snow to fall so often around the start of March in the Midlands but the last few years have delivered.

It's going to snow on Andy's birthday everyone! :D

The day I was born (9th December 1990) was the great Midlands/Yorkshire blizzard:

    http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/archive/...00119901209.gif

Although I must say for my 18th although there was snow on the ground I don't remember anything about the day after :)

  14. Thanks, I agree, but I would say that!!

I think old habits die hard though, and wz was the original chart viewing site. Usage of our charts is growing all the time though, with over 30,000 an hour being viewed at times

Hi Paul, just for a bit of feedback-

I tend to use the WZ charts except for the UK charts (e.g. precip). This is mainly because of habit and also because for some reason I think they're a bit easier to use. I prefer the way the 6z is still there when the 12z is coming out for example (even though I know you can view the two together on NW, but it's a bit of a faff!) However I speak fairly fluent German fortunately so language isn't really a barrier, although I appreciate it can be :)

  15. lol is that some kind of joke ECM 12Z is the best run tonight for prolonged cold with the arctic high nudging down into northern scandinavia. :D

True in terms of the Easterly, but personally I would rather see the low tracking right across us with mega hill snow; unfortunately none of these easterlies have associated deep cold pools and so they are unlikely to produce much convection. But then again, that's personal preference of someone who lives near and regularly climbs high hills :D
