My best guess is a decent mid range DSLR camera, then long exposure, ideally shutter speed of 20-30 second or above, wide aperture, manual focus to infinity, then processed a bit in photoshop, lightroom or similar. Hopefully one day myself I could get to the skills of Sam or others with the DSLR cams.
I know @Southern Storm and @ChannelThunder have gotten some amazing shots this year locally and abroad with likely DSLR's!
Yeah, I shoot mainly with my Canon EOS r which is more in the enthusiasts range, but any entry / mid range camera should enable you to shoot lightning
A decent tripod, shutter release Cable and patience is all that's needed, the photos that I and many other people post on here are the ones that turned out ok, but the reality is that most of the pictures you take are either devoid of lightning, or have been ruined by some other factor, wind shaking the camera, rain on the lens, forgetting to turn off image stabilization (you don't want this on if shooting on a tripod) or going to the wrong location, which is all part of the fun of shooting storms.
Oh and the most important thing of all..... You need a storm to photograph in the first place
It's a painful hobby most of the time, but well worth pursuing

The Morning after the night before, and what a night it was!
I feel like most of the areas that were lacking storms over the past few months will have gotten something last night, but most importantly, for everyone else that visits this thread, you won't have to listen to us lot in central southern areas complain we haven't had a storm this year
I'm sure they'll be some that still haven't had a close encounter yet, but as last year proves, it's possible to get a good storm well into October, so have faith as you never know what can happen.
Yesterday will go down as one of the best days for storms that I personally can remember, waking up at 4am and seeing the storms over towards Weymouth was a great way to start the day, then there were more storms late morning, before the cherry on to which was last night.
2023 storm season condensed in the one amazing day, I'll take that!

That bad boy over Bmth airport is dropping some large positive strikes. You can just tell by the depth of the thunder.
This is one serious specimen. Can't believe how good this is. Well worth the wait!

So in the battle of heart and mind the mind one, probably the right call
Definitely, it's not worth putting myself and others at risk over a photo
Good thing is I can see cloud forks out to sea

So. I've decided to stay on my home patch, I can see the cells near Cherbourg flashing away every 5 seconds or so
I've been up since 4am, going for a long drive is probably not the best thing to do, especially at night and on roads I don't know.
So I'm keeping everything crossed for something local, Eastern areas should do well though, so good luck to everyone

I’ve been more of an observer on here for a few years now. What amazes me is the lack of knowledge of storm chasers. Granted many want to learn, however, I’m 55 and have been studying weather since the age of 7. I started off with the Ladybook of weather followed by the Osborne weather book. Both excellent reads and it amazes me that so many cannot even read the sky. Computer models are fine but the real basics come from reading the sky, the clouds etc. Animals do and yet so many wannabe weather spotters think the latest PC run dog biscuits is the holy grail of information.
In essence start understanding the basics and one will know when a storm is approaching. The set up this morning was a joke. There was no way a storm was going to smash the south coast and yet so many got their hopes up over a computer model and yet nature said NO!
While to some extent you are correct, the models have been all over this convective spell for around 5 days, could you enlighten us all on how you can forecast by reading the clouds 5 days from T0, we'd all love to know !

I can recall Many occasions when people were posting that it was a bust, when in reality everyone was focusing on the wrong drivers.
Let's wait and see, there will be some great footage on here come tomorrow afternoon mark my words
Some will win and many will lose that's storms for ya!

Agreed with everything you said, and I would never have guessed you were shooting on entry level gear, you photos always look amazing, but I guess the proves your point!
