  1. Light snow at best at present. http://www.durham.gov.uk/pages/WeatherStationDetails.aspx?station=13
  2. With the increase in wind associated with this front, I would expect any inversions to be gone fairly soon. Every system is different just a matter of wait and see. Intensity of precipitation is often the major factor in lowering freezing levels.
  3. Temp now 0.2C with dp -0.7C. Should fall again with precipitation band, hopefully.
  4. Snow shrs ahead of the main band here. Temps rising quickly to -0.4C. Light winds compared to yesterday.
  5. Dusting of snow from light shrs. Temp 0.5C
  6. - 2.6C with the wind chill down to -9C. Penetrating frost.
  7. The element missing from recent winters has been widespread blizzards. The wind is such a major issue in regard to disruption. Both 1947/63 had wind snow events. Blowing snow onto roads and reduced visibility can cause major transport disruption in a few hours.
  8. Misty, dull, damp start but good news Durham County council has its road side AWS online with webcams. Hopefully make good viewing this winter. http://www.durham.gov.uk...ges/WeatherStations.aspx
  9. 122cm was reported at Consett. Impressive single event, most of the snow fell in about 36hrs.
  10. Just been reading your accounts of the blizzards of 1978/79 on Col. Its one major element that's been missing from recent winters is a widespread snow associated with strong winds. Your notes of the 60mph winds with heavy snow and sub zero temps evoque vivid images. Pics from Weardale http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/twoother/twocontent.aspx?type=bg&id=1626 1947 was expectional. Nearby station of Newbiggin in Teesdale report for Febuary max temp of 0C for the month with 10.45" of rainfall. Rainfall totals for first 3 months was 22", perhaps 15"+ of that will have fallen as snow.
  11. Not just the Midlands were effected. Northern England aswell. Winds here appear to have been stronger here with a gust to 85mph at Warcop Range.
  12. Heaviest snow shrs about 5/10 miles to my East overnight. Copley reporting 11cm snow lying. More snow in Barnard Castle than here. Here just 1/2cm powdery snow but with strong wind it just blown about. Overninght low -1.1C, penetrating frost with F6 wind gusting 35mph. No snow in Cumbria apart from the odd light shr in the evening.
  13. Lowest max in Sept in England is 6.2C. Malham Tarn 1974. Bingly up 9c and Flyingdales up 8.4C. So cold but short of a record.
  14. Strange, near complete lack of midges here this summer. Cool temps and to much wind. Cloudy, odd patches drizzle. Temp 14.9C
  15. Whlist not as bad as Cumbria over the last few days, here its been cloudy and windy with a brief sunny spell on Monday. Still awaiting first 20C of the summer. With cool temps ahead in low/mid teens into the weekend, August will have to provide the warm sunny weather so lacking since the May blip. Today, light rain, cloudy, temp 13.4C
  16. You do appear to have a great climate over there in the N York Moors, excellent amounts of snow, thunderstorms and far enough east to miss out of the prevailing wet weather from the West esp in Winter.
  17. Perhaps a move to the N York Moors would be in order. The cool coastal climate of West Cumbria will rarely fill the weather requirements you desire.
  18. Dull, cloud bases lower, starting to drizzle. Breezy. At least its mild. Temp 16.3C Looking cooler more unsettled ahead.
  19. Could be even cooler on Sunday. Not the best day today even for early June in the NE, 10C warmer in parts of Cumbria. Grey, drizzly and fresh in the breeze.
  20. Snow patch on Mickle Fell gone today. No patches to be seen on Cross Fell either. Fresh snow lying on the Howgills and Wid Boar Fell this morning down to approx 1500ft on the later
  21. Small snow patch still left on SW slope of Mickle Fell, Co Durham
  22. Unsettled, wet month but nowhere near as wet as many other areas. The wind was probably the main feaure of the month, severe drifting early in the month with the snowfall. Ave temp 5.2C Ave max 8.3C Ave min 2.1C Rainfall 105mm Max 12.5C Min -2.6C
  23. Unpleasant afternoon but this system continues the trend of this month in that the worst conditions appear to have been over the Southern half of Northern England. Only slightly windier than yesterday. Wintry mix from last evenings shrs. Nothing wintry yet today.
