  1. Very interesting especially 1985/86 this one gave 4 ice days while 1996/97 gave 5 or 6. How many did you get during this one?
  2. Yes Mushy a few charts from that classic January biggest snowfall in my lifetime with exceptional blizzards  Cold lasted from this... http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119820105.gif I really like this type of chart it delivers the best. Then it all collapsed. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119820115.gif
  3. Yes thought it was 6 weeks and thats the longest with snow on the ground,1963 was the only longer spell which nearer to 3 months. Last december`s 2007 cold spell came out as 9 days. I did record 2 colder days to January 1997 and one colder night. This is from my other reading average Jan 1997 these reads much lower but better to compare -7.4c This month first 10 days is colder -7.75c to Jan 1997!!!!
  4. 1985/86 was a one sided winter november was cold and snowy then december was mild at 6.2c. Most of January 3.5c was unmemorable here until the last 3/4 days here which were very memorable and into the next month which was the coldest month since 1963 and the coldest feb since 1947 sounds great that.
  5. That means it was a 13 day cold spell with 2.9c or below here beginning from december 26th to January 7th... 4c on the 8th just 1 day above 2.9c so it was 15 days next day was 1.6c. Mean max here was 0.9c Mean min was -3.0c 1996 started from the 28th to January 10th,the 27th was over 2.9c if I would be using newer more accurate readings. But it also started before that on the 19th to 26th so another week 23 days cold spell, just 1 day less cold. Much more snow cover during that cold spell with 2inches on the 31st, then 3 to 4 inches during early January. As this one only gave a covering.
  6. It`s milder alright at 7.7c max but it still feels just as cold as the cold spell due to the strong winds yet and the house feels colder today. Cold with no or very light wind doesn`t feel cold like today somehow. Did have some drizzle.
  7. Snow will of gone as there was s little, but ice thats a different matter, thats going to take a good many days to thaw we have a round barrel 3 foot high and the ice in it if you push it down with you hand it only goes down level with the top, that hasn`t happened for a few years to freeze all the way through, and theres an outside water tank overflowing because of ice on the ball valve just cleared the ice from it. Burst water pipes are possible now with the big thaw, frost will take a few days to fully come out of the ground aswell.
  8. The eastern CET zone was much colder to the western side yesterday so as you said a downward correction looks very likely. London had it`s coldest day for over a decade yesterday now thats what was said on the news, coldest day since what year is what I like to know.
  9. All the natural fallen snow has gone,1 small pile left otherwise after clearing the path and that`s dirty snow now. 7.3c and very windy.
  10. Quite right these last few months have all ended up lower than expected at the end of the countdown, and winter months are more important to see below average. 71-00 average. March -0.2c April -0.2c June -0.2c July -0.3c August 0.0c September -0.2c October -0.7c november +0.1c December -1.6c January -????
  11. Thats the one a covering will do until it`s blown all off the fields, as long as it`s quite powdery to very powdery,it`ll still drift even it it isn`t powdery but wet nope. 6 inches of powdery snow is much much better though with plenty to keep topping up drifting/blizzards on a sunny day absolute bliss it doesn`t need to snow after. snow grains small flakes are the best for drifting though when it does stop or the snowdrift layer goes hard. Big flakes are not.
  12. 4.5c below 1997 here now including last nights min todays max would`nt make any difference either. I`m quite surprised January 1996 ended up so high at 4.3c with a very cold spell at the end,as January 2006 came in exactly the same. Pattern could well change for the colder probably later this month seems to be whats happening this year. If this slack spell would of continued as it did a sub 0c wouldn`t of been out of the question, with surface cold persisting from the SE,but never mind the atlantic wants a piece of the action.
  13. A few pics I took this morning of the remaining snow, frozen brook with an Ice waterfall !!!! with a touch more snow. Got down to -4.4c last night so another hard frost, wind is south to SW today still been cold all morning but now it`s 1.4c. Alot of high cloud about today with some very weak sun,had a reasonable frost cover.
  14. Yes it`s certainly following the full moon pattern by the book this year very different, something I`ve never followed before, all very interesting forecasts. As for cold nightime temps they can get more potent as the winter goes on even in March. March 2006 had some very hard frosts,March 2001 gave some severe frosts as cold as this January here,And theres still february yet.
  15. So it was 3.5c after all of that then. January 1985/february 1985 were very sunny months as I remember, even february 1986 also had quite a few sunny days I can clearly remember despite all the snowcover during those 3 months.
  16. http://91.121.93.17/pics/Rmgfs184.gif GFS is showing -9c mins tonight for the london area, less cold here as the wind is to much S/SW. Could well be colder than the other night when -12c was.
  17. Looking much cooler around our shores 1c below average to the east/SE and irish sea ,check the previous page unisys map,and looking cool around spain,a cold pool to the north upto 1.5c below ave. The atlantic is looking as mild as ever though, but further west to last couple of years,as it`s cooler around Ireland aswell this cold has certainly helped. That high anomaly is alot lower now.
  18. There wasn`t an inch here either half an inch, and it`s still frozen along our yard with still a covering and doesn`t want to go.
  19. Last blizzard here was in february 2006 N-ly which gave an amazing squally shower as winds were gale force during that a heavy whiteout shower and some fantastic drifting with snow that was already drifting before, blinding it`s my favourite kind of weather. aswell as thunderstorms. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/20...00120060228.gif
  20. Had some drizzle with a touch of sleet in yesterday morning at 0.7c And heres a recent year after the heavy snow, when there was freezing light drizzle after with a SE-ly it didn`t last that long that day a hour or so, in March 2006. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/20...00120060312.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/20...00220060312.gif The thing was though temps reached 1.3c but it was still freezing on surfaces in a very cold SE-ly must of been some very low dewpoints or something like that. Quite an incredible cold spell that was in recent times.
  21. Cloudy here and temps have lifted to 1.6c,the ground is still sparkling though so a ground frost just even with cloudcover. -0.7c was the min which helped to lower ground temps, looking at XC clearer skies are coming in from the south/SE and cloud is coming in from that direction.
  22. Cloud is over here now but it`s a thin layer, and it hasn`t made alot of difference to the temps yet at -0.3c
  23. But January 1997 is a good baseline which was infact the coldest since 1987. There was a much milder spell then at around the same time whats coming now, good month to compare with my temps. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119970112.gif
  24. It`s been a lovely sunny day with no cloud at all max of 4c though but with no thawing what snow is left in the shade as even frost still remains. -0.6c now although there looks to be cloud to the south and some patchy fog rolling over the hills to the south also.
