  1. Some may of fallen into 2 traps for this month, but I`m still going for 3.3c coldest since 2001,cold first half then milder again then getting colder later on it`s worked so far this year.
  2. Could do with the much colder upper air,as these last couple of winters 3 counting this one yet havn`t given -10 upper air. Today is certainly cold though with quite mild uppers, surface east cold is the best to cure that. http://91.121.93.17/pics/Rtavn062.png The last really cold easterly, but temps were only 2.3c lower to today. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119970101.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00219970101.gif
  3. Yes it`s colder higher up alright took a reading and it was -0.9c at 350m asl and even the tap frozen up there since I used it earlier so it`s pretty cold today, coldest day since January 3rd at 0.3c max here. -0.2c now and cloudy with a light east wind.
  4. It`s only surface cold at the moment upper air is the same as the surface, saying that it is colder today temps are hardly rising above 0c with cloudcover,it`s like last december`s mid cold spell at the moment, should get below freezing tonight even with cloudcover.
  5. Got down to -0.6c and it was clear early evening short while,it also got down to -0.6c at 9.30am and it was overcast. After yesterday sunny day 2.3c max today has been mainly cloudy, sun did come out briefly but much colder today 0.0c
  6. That cloudcover has come back again 1.3c now but it`s later in the day,can see clear skies to the south again most of the CET zone may end up clear, but how much was clear last night.
  7. Cloudy all night still had an air black frost though at -0.3c,since then cloud has broken up and sunny intervals at 0.9c with that lovely dry east wind.
  8. Quite a E-ly breeze this early evening,still cloudy at 0.4c
  9. It`s 7 months below the 71-00 average what OP is referring to as far as I can say, which is good enough for me.
  10. No sun today as that is kept way to the south of here had a max of 1.9c.
  11. One thing for certain is this month will be another below average month as the CET will keep on falling to the end of the month each day, today is that little bit colder to yesterday, 4.5c to 4.2c on both sites to the 26th.
  12. Yesterday turned out to be the best day over christmas with sun and clears skies fresh east wind in the morning, later it dropped off, a max of 2.1c coldest boxing day since 2004,got down to -1.8c then it clouded over temp still around 0c. Still cloudy E/NE and 1.8c.
  13. Surprisingly on Philip`s site there was only a 0.2c rise to 3.8c and yesterday was very mild, today is 4c lower here. http://www.climate-uk.com/index.html A finish of 3.5c or below looks very likely on his site.
  14. Climate uk is on 3.6c upto the 21st so today is very much on the mild side as mild as this week gets,as each day will cool off and by going by this morning forecast 2c was shown for saturday. GFS maybe overdoing the maxes slightly as the wind may not be that strong. http://91.121.93.17/pics/Rtavn10817.png http://91.121.93.17/pics/Rtavn1087.png This could be the coldest december month since 1996, 2.9c 3.6c is the target to beat 2001.
  15. As far as what you say. It has happened since 1988 a number of times I would say since 1988. Heres the most recent January I can find with an undercutting low which gave snow and bitter low temps got down to -9c here. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/20...00120030107.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/20...00120030108.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/20...00120030109.gif The last winter or winters which had a weak northern arm of the jet was February 2005 and winter 2005/06 when the energy went into the southern arm of the jet as far as I remember seeing.
  16. XC weather shows 70mph mean speed for the highest arrow top left, otherwise into the 60mph. http://www.xcweather.co.uk/ Noticed this sharp little low a few days ago.
  17. Mildest day for 23 days at 9.2c so it`s a change to not feel cold.
  18. Looks like the one tree is bent over, looks like quite a powdery snow on those pics so not too damaging to trees.
  19. Milder today upto 8.2c and cloudy with a little drizzle min of 0.5c Mild air hasn`t reached the east it seems. http://91.121.93.17/pics/Rtavn0617.png
  20. These were certainly cursed even larger teapot months. I don`t want to see again. December 1988... 7.5 cet http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119881228.gif January 2007...7.0 http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/20...00120070115.gif
  21. Yes I believe the easterly flow is making a comeback of sorts in recent years, with severe cold like 1987 is an extreme event for upper air coldest ever across the UK. http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~taharley/2005_weather.htm February 2005 was the longest easterly since the legendary february 1986 and that will always take some beating only february 1947 was colder. Severe cold from the east, yes that has been missing february 1991 was the last, with a scandi high lasting 2 weeks.
  22. 2005/2006 broke that mould of west/SW winds, but why does it happen in the middle of a decade, same goes for 1995/96 but to a lesser extent, there were more east winds winter from february 2005 to March 2006 since february 1986 infact but not as cold of course so east winds still happen.
  23. Last time the was any lying snow was april 17th 2008 which was the latest april snow falling/snowfall here since april 28th 2002... which gave a slight dusting of hail but not snow so that doesn`t really count,so we have to go back to not april but May 7th 1997 with snow, hail falling and lying.
  24. It did reach 0.3c last night with a frost, just cloudy today at 4c now.
  25. Wind here was gale force from the south/SE even a smallish silver birch has uprooted but not fallen as it`s leaning onto another tree in the dingle I found yesterday, and torrential rain at times water table is now high to say the least.
