  1. Or maybe the most easterly christmas since 2000 no wonder that was my coldest xmas day of the 00`s.
  2. Cool on average thats the 00`s here .... last christmas 2007... 4.5c. 2006....3.6c 2005....3.7c frost. 2004....0c white christmas 2 1/2 inches. 2003....7c 2002....7c 2001....1c Late white christmas. 2000....-1c A few bits of snow about.
  3. 1987/88 was a totally disapointing winter after the previous ones. As 1988/89 and 1999/2000 It was the heavy snows in april 89/2000 that saved them from being one of the more snowless to me. Not forgetting november 1988 cold spell.
  4. As for december 1991 being similar to last year it was in some ways CET 4.7c last year 4.9c. Coldest day -3c under an inversion. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119911211.gif Last december coldest. -2.5c max using my old reading to compare to as nightime lowest was the same under the same east/SE flow. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/20...00120071220.gif
  5. This was the winter with the least amount of snow I`ve seen/recorded much more known for lots of frosts instead. Having just looked back even october 17th 1991 had wintry showers. December just 1 day 20th slight covering of snow with a bit of drifting and that was the only drifting all winter. January 9th with a slight wet covering snow, otherwise just severe frosts and very dry. Feb 15th/17th with another slight covering with sleet, snow showers and thats winter. It carried on into March/april with wintry shower mix hail/sleet/snow showers, but last spring was much better  ,and even recorded more snow depth last november, but nov 1991 it stayed around for longer 6 days in the shade with a slight patchy covering.
  6. I don`t even remember it but I must of as I recorded my highest october temp which I didn`t know about until I just looked. 14c min to 20c maybe 1c higher.
  7. Very interesting posts by Roger and BFTP, the only disadvantage if we`re heading for a more prolonged solar minima is very little aurora displays in the near future in the UK. Advantage colder winters are a better chance, although saying that I saw my first northern lights display in March 1986 pure luck, land that was a cold winter/cold snowy first week of march as 1986 was a cold year overall.
  8. That is a very concerning graph seems like a coincidence/pattern there 1 year after 78/79 winter it peaks then again after 1981/82 then again after the last cold winters mid-80`s then 95/96 it shoots back up. Just looking at the sea ice concetration just taking this as an e.g. for 1991 seems like there was quite an area of 60% with more reds for the area north of greenland as this year it shows it at 100% but yes it`s a dramatic loss from the far side.
  9. There was no display in march 1987 not as I could see as after the march 1986 one first one I saw one of the best, I looked every night that month 1987 march but there was nothing I was dissapointed. March 1989 sounds exactly like the one you saw and yeah there was a gibbous month aswell that was a once in a lifetime display and one of the highlights ever for me I`ve seen as they could see that in africa and it knocked out a few satelite dishes out. :o
  10. December 1995 actually had the equal coldest night of the century at -27.2c the same as January 1982. So it was very potent indeed in the north.
  11. That is remarkable!!!!! I`ve never seen snow in september not as I can remember, air frosts in sept 1986 taking the leaves of the bottom half of the trees but thats all.
  12. For me my memory of that exceptional cold 1987 spell was a shorter lived one to feb 1991 to me they were a similar spell somehow, except feb 1991 was a month later with not as potent cold air less wind still bitterly cold though. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119870106.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119870120.gif As feb 1991 seemed to last longer which it did by 1 week. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119910125.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119910214.gif
  13. The 12 January as far as showers were they were on the light side falling from just blue skies blowing in the wind small cumulus coming from an east/NE, during a monday as I remember with lots of sunshine extremely dry magical flakes of very powdery snow slow falling flakes, after the overnight snow and blizzard from 2 nights before. The amazing thing is though the sun didn`t thaw anything not even frost on a gate incredible that was one the coldest days ever
  14. From november to March these are the perfect months/charts including Blast`s from Feb 86 well it started end of Jan.
  15. Just to add I`ve taped this by accident meant to tape something else. Seen it again with the lights and yes it is speeded up with jerky cloud movements. Not all of it though Joanna lumley was great and she was really moved by it. Some faster than others.
  16. Thats how they look in real life, they looked speeded up to how I`ve seen them though, might be different up there.
  17. I`ve never seen them in winter, spring and autumn the only time and I`ve seen them and once in august 1990 that was only by luck red/orange in that one to the north. I liked the igloo hotel it melts in mid-april and the work that goes into making that after all that.!!!!!! Thats the key get away from any street lights in the country As for it looking fake looked at the stars which stayed/clouds they moved slowly.
  18. To the north of here spring is better for me to see them for some reason. Programn on now.
  19. Yep this looks interesting I havn`t seen a programn about northern lights before. I`ve seen them last time was on april 11th 2001 which seems along while ago now.
  20. No thunder here last autumn. There wants more detailed maps. Theres been a slight rise looking at my dates this decade to the 90`s, 2006 had more than most.
  21. We had a wet spring ground was soft then with springs of water coming out of our yard/ rocks, just like today happens when it this wet had 1 inch on april 30th from a similar tracking slow moving low to yesterdays and water lasts 1 to 3 days after it`s rained to start with about 2/3 times a year usually in winter, it`s a great guide to how wet the ground is here. then the river usually floods.
  22. It is a different scale yes. But it`s definately increased looking at those maps in the areas I mentioned. Infact that only goes to 2000 and this decade has seen even higher thunder days in the autumn with higher temps.
  23. Sun did come out briefly still only got upto 13.7c then 13c now and forgot to say it`s the wettest it`s been water table that is since april 30th/may 1st here so it`s very high indeed for early sept. A cool NW wind and still cloudy but dry at least.
  24. Warm where you are the pit. 13.2 here now and been cloudy all day no rain max was 14.2c so just about the 2nd coolest day so far this autumn and coolest day this coming week by the looks of it.
  25. Looks like thunder has increased outside of summer in september for Wales and Scotland. Something I`ve noticed outside of summer, but less thunder in the summer to the 80`s.
