  1. In reality I hope it doesn't drift like that again, it was fun but only because I didn't have to be anywhere. Come hell or high water, I've got to go to work on Friday, even my Landy can't chug its way through lanes completely filled with snow, it was over 10 foot high in places in March.
  2. My trusty old Landy is a bit of a tank. It has some interesting foibles, some more endearing than others, however having to scrape ice off the inside of the windscreen this morning isn't one of the best ones. It will however chug through pretty much everything, stick the dif lock on and it's away.
  3. Chill, the weather will do whatever it wants to do, regardless of what folk want. And anyway, the beast was supposed to deliver big time for them last year, instead it came over our side and we got the lot. This lot was supposed to be theirs's, had their name written all over it, they're entitled to be a bit miffed if they miss out again and we get to play. Wonder if the Mendip lanes will get filled in again, might do if the wind picks up
  4. Shush, you'll jinx it. Ever heard of Karma? We SW folk have learnt to be magnanimous when it comes to snow, we have to be living down here.
  5. Not too quick, according to METO it doesn't get above freezing here until Saturday afternoon and even then only briefly going up to 2c.
  6. Afternoon campers, are we all just a teeny bit excited? I know I am. Just checked METO for tomorrow, it has me down for a couple of hours of light snow from early afternoon, followed by 6 hours of heavy snow, then another 3 of light falls to finish it off. Never mind playing bingo, I'm playing Pontoon and sticking whilst keeping everything crossed the forecast follows the script. Came past the local gritting depot earlier, as well as filling the gritters, they've fitted the shiny new ploughs to the trucks Hoping to find the lane out of the village looking like this again, surely that's not too much to hope for, is it?
  7. Morning, bright frosty start to the day here. Currently looking likely that some of us will get snow tomorrow, although who and where seems a bit of a lottery. If you're off to stock up on essential supplies, grab some of these from your local pound shop...
  8. Local station on Wunderground reporting 0.0 with a dew point of -3c, even allowing for that stations tendency to be 0.5 - 1c colder than other local stations, it's prime snow temperature territory. Someone mentioned earlier about a Bristol channel streamer, manna from heaven for this area, the last time (February 2009) we got about a foot of snow from one. Is there really a chance? Pub in Bradford today.....seemed like sound advice so we followed it
  9. Snow here It was raining in Bradford on Avon when I left about an hour ago, turned to heavy sleet at about the A36, turned to light snow after Norton St Phillip, changing to heavy snow as I climbed the hills towards home. It was settling here too, grass turning white but sadly now melting as the snow has stopped. Any more to come or is that it?
  10. Met office update says nothing at all here today. It's gone from heavy snow to heavy rain to bone dry. Confused..... Think looking out the window is best option.
  11. Morning all, currently 0.2c here according to a personal station listed on Wunderground, not sure I trust it too much as it always seems to be 1c below all other local ones. Looking at their map, temps locally anywhere between 0-3c. Met Office updated overnight and it seems the front is looking like moving through about 5 hours earlier than previously expected, yesterday it showed snow here from 5pm onwards for a few hours, now it shows rain from mid morning onwards. No mention of snow for today. Thursday looks promising at the mo, fingers crossed eh. https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=ISTOKEST4#history
  12. Morning all, a slight dusting here and frozen solid on top of the ice, proper wintery out there, and lethal.
  13. Forgot to say....heavy sleet just outside Keynsham earlier today, turned to plain old rain after about 10 mins. Hubby in Bath reported snow, as did a friend working in Corsham. If this is as good as winter is going to get then I say roll on spring, bound to get some then
  14. Sorry, I had already gone to work when you posted and missed it until now. The highest points on Mendips is in and around Priddy/Charterhouse, there are some lovely walks and lots of public footpaths. Or if you don't fancy trekking cross country and risk getting lost, head to Stockhill Woods just outside Priddy, it's Forestry Commission so you can wander at will. There are broad, hard surface paths that criss cross the woods or you can wander off through the woods, plenty of parking there too. The woods are about 280 meters asl, so if it's marginal it's usually snow up there, being mostly conifer, when there's snow it's like walking through an alpine landscape This is what it looks like up there (don't get excited, this is a couple of years old).
  15. Morning, are you home today? I'm at work near Bristol so don't expect anything there, also think if there's anything here it'll be gone by the time I get home. If you're at work too, there's no one on Mendip snow watch
  16. No you're not. I'm planning my escape from here (got to build a house this year, then sell it). Hubby has been well briefed and frequently warned, the only place I'll consider moving to around here is Priddy/a mile circumference, that gives an altitude anywhere between 260-300 meters Streetmap.co.uk is fantastic for checking elevation.
  17. Hmmm. not sure that 6 months pregnant and sledging is the best combination, maybe snowman building instead eh.
  18. Cornwall got some surprises during the Beast last year, hopefully you'll get some more nice surprises this time too. From what my befuddled brain can decipher in the MOD thread, lots of classic battlegrounds are cropping up, if that happens you'll be sledging just as soon as you've dug yourself out
  19. Think you're probably right there. It just isn't cold enough for an approaching front not to raise the temps/dew points too high for snow. Let's face it, down in these parts we need something akin to witch craft to enable a westerly front to fall as snow. Even here in the Mendips, I'll be amazed if it's anything other than rain, maybe up on the plateau (which is 60 or so meters higher than here) may get lucky.
  20. For a brief moment there I got all excited....shouldn't have clicked on the image to enlarge it. Coming after someone had posted a NW radar pic, my early morning eyes saw pink over Somerset, instant 'woohoo'. More coffee needed.... I've been around here for a while now, avidly following the winter charts and I can't remember a time other than 2010 when there's been such a strong consensus that it's going to turn wintry. There'll be daily wobbles but until the likes of GP, Catacol, Chino etc say 'it isn't going to happen' I have complete faith that winter is coming Looking at the pretty, blobby model pics this morning, even my totally ignorant brain can see cold, cold and more cold incoming.
  21. Afternoon, whilst we're all waiting to see if the promise in the models actually delivers something more than a fleeting few flakes, I thought I'd bring this to your attention. It was published a few years ago, for anyone who missed it at the time, it's definitely worth a read. Full of reports, photo's and personal experiences of our most memorable winters, 1947, 1963 and 1978/79. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Frozen-Time-Worst-Winters-History/dp/1905080093/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1547223115&sr=1-2-fkmr0&keywords=frozen+it+me+ian+mccaskill
  22. No reason at all in my opinion but as I haven't a clue how it all works, you'd best not listen to me. Personally speaking I find the idea exciting and terrifying in equal measure, would be fun to experience it in many ways, but as a self employed gardener, I'd be SERIOUSLY skint - that doesn't fill me with joy.
