  1. Not a clue but I can tell you the sodding squirrels have dug up and stolen every bulb, in every pot at work and they've never done that before, not even in 2010. It can only mean one thing, another 1947 is just around the corner
  2. Oh lawdy, there's enough weird stuff in Glastonbury already. On the plus side it would give all those folk tripping on chemicals, dreams they'd never forget
  3. That really is the limit of my understanding. Weather models and deciphering them is merely an adult version of algebra to me, that didn't (and doesn't make any sense to me) and I can still hear my Maths Master's frustration echoing in my ears now, especially if I ask the clever grown ups in the MOD thread.
  4. Thanks. So it's a law of averages thing rather than a specific 'not happening because the purple blob can't go there, unless there's a green blob over there, and the pink blob disappears' sort of problem?
  5. This isn't a dig, it's a genuine question from someone who sees nothing but pretty blobs and squiggles on weather charts (it's all just gibberish to me) why do you think this isn't going to happen?
  6. I'm not liking the look of that, please can you tell me from which direction it's supposed to be coming from? I live in the bottom left hand side of the country, (the bit that has very little snow on that map). In 2010 down in that part of the country we had very little snow whilst the rest of the country had loads, sure it was cold but not particularly snowy, I do hope it's not going to be the same again. Can you offer any glimmer of hope that we may be included this time?
  7. That's what I thought. Perhaps we're both going senile?
  8. Have you checked this area out? Lots of stuff in there https://www.netweather.tv/forum/forum/40-historic-weather/
  9. Surprised at that prediction, I thought the general view was that cycle 24 hadn't even reached minimum yet?
  10. Speaking as a farmers daughter and professional gardener with 30 years working outside all year round under my belt, I have to say (with the greatest of respect) that's utter poppycock. The only influence warm soil temps have is whether or not snow settles and even that's questionable, light snow for a couple of hours will melt, heavy or prolonged snow will cool the surface and settle. Farmers will tell folk all sorts of nonsense, it's nothing but a bit of fun to wind folk up but you really shouldn't believe them.
  11. Torn between excited and nervous at your inclusion of 1947..... In your opinion do you see the weather here becoming as cold as 2010 or possibly colder still, and long lasting like 1947? What would need to happen for the cold to get 'locked in' for a long period of time?
  12. Oh shush. We had a summer campaign down here, we've removed the M4 and replaced it with an enormous funnel.
  13. Makes a big difference. If it wasn't for the fact my family are intent on staying around here, I'd be on top of a big hill somewhere in Swaledale. My aim in the next year or two is to move to the Mendip Plateau, it's about 250ft higher than here, every little helps
  14. Location definitely helps, I live in the mild and soggy South West but when it comes to snow I'm helped immensely by living 600ft up in the Mendip Hills, the Somerset levels didn't get anywhere near that amount of snow. I have known a foot of snow fall at the beginning of April but that was all gone in a couple of days, caused carnage though. Personally will never forget it as I was moving house that day, try getting huge removal lorries down country lanes on the Mendip Hills with a foot of snow on the ground, it really, really doesn't work well!
  15. It's obviously getting in on the act of 'fake news'.
  16. When the beast arrived here I was too busy watching the icicles grow to notice any drip It was blinking cold here and the snow hung around for days, helped in part that it drifted so high but some drifts lasted nigh on two weeks. On another note....reckon I'm definitely going senile, having spent the day up a ladder pruning an immense Wisteria and getting absolutely frozen for my troubles, I really cannot fathom why on earth I'd want it to get even colder. I work outside for goodness sakes, why oh why am I craving snow and ice? Senile or bonkers, it's certainly a long way from sanity.
  17. I'm at work and the woodpeckers seem entirely unconvinced of any cold weather coming, despite the sharp frost this morning. There's at least four in full on head banging mode, looking for a mate and claiming their tree.
  18. Slightly underwhelmed here. If after all the expectation and waiting, all we get down here in the SW is to watch the rest of Europe and most of this country get cold and snowy, whilst we enjoy cold rain or a bit of frost, I think I'll sob. Note to self...patience, patience, patience.
  19. Morning all, lovely frosty start to the day here, looks promising for the day to come with lots of clear sky.
  20. Dilemma time.....the farm shop had bargain spruce trees this year (£15) so couldn't resist buying a couple of 8ft ones for either side of my front door. They look so pretty covered in fairy lights, but would look prettier still covered in snow too. I know they're supposed to come down by 6th Jan but so tempted to leave them until the end of the month just in case we get lucky. I suppose if any of the neighbours say anything I could always claim they're pot grown ones, designed to stay up all year round
  21. Sodding shortwaves are like Alice, pop up out of nowhere, never know what havoc they're going to cause!
  22. I thought my time of holding my breath, peeking through my fingers, wondering if it's safe to look yet, was done for tonight after an hour of Luther and then I came on here..... The tension's as bad, are we really going to be blessed this time, will nirvana finally happen? I don't know who or what to drool over the most, Idris Elba or deep cold charts. It's all too much, going for a lie down.
  23. Happy New Year everyone! Much better start to the day here, chilly, dry and broken cloud allowing glimpses of blue sky Turned really quite windy here last night, was expecting some rain too but thankfully it stayed dry instead of soaking all the party goers and their fireworks.
  24. Couldn't resist it. Amazes me how stressed out and grumpy they all get.
