  1. I'm confused....hubby works for Mendip DC, they've all just been sent an email telling them to take work home tonight, to work from home tomorrow, as more snow is forecast - they follow advice from METO. Tonight? Really?
  2. A question for you clever folk....just checked the forecast for here and from tomorrow night at 9pm, all the way through to Wed 6am, it's saying moderate sleet. But, the temperature range is forecast to be -0.9c to -2.4c, the dew temp range is -1.6c to -3.1 so how would it be sleet?????
  3. Evening All, been out and about today generally messing around and taking pics up here on the Mendips. The roads weren't as bad as I thought they may be, but there were still quite a few jack knifed lorries and abandoned cars around. We ended up with about 7 inches, there's no sign of a thaw and it's started to snow again . When this lot freezes tonight, the roads will be treacherous and if the wind picks up a bit, it'll drift quite badly as it's so powdery. Here are some pics, me, hubby, the dogs, preferred style of mendip transport and some strange snowy bumps on the horizon (Bronze age burial mounds at Priddy) oh and some cheesed off looking sheep.
  4. Morning everyone, haven't read through the thread so only have a vague idea about what's happened and where but up here in the hills, we're doing quite well. At 3 this morning when it had just started (bang on the METO forecast), the wind was fierce and snow horizontal. It's still windy here but the level depth on the patio table is 6 inches. The A37 is shut in various placed due to drifting, could be quite interesting up on the Mendip plateau....Porridge and coffee for me, then off out with the camera in the Landy, see how far I can get. Hopefully pics later. Have fun.
  5. Wags stern finger in your direction....just don't do it too often.
  6. Morning Rich and welcome. I'm going back to bed, usually I'd scowl in the dark at the rattling slates, tonight/morning I can drift off with a smile, knowing they're rattling for a good reason. Enjoy watching and waiting folks.
  7. Latest radar show band now in a line from Wooten under Edge, Corsham, edge of Salisbury down to Lymington. All showing as snow.
  8. It's currently snowing sideways around here. None of that gentle, floating snowflake stuff but the kind that used to blow through the keyhole when I was a kid.
  9. Morning Black2 and welcome to the madhouse. Popping out for a fag, if I'm not back in 10, someone come dig me out...
  10. Just checked NW extra, it says temp 1c dew point -2 for here. Radar replay looks like the snow started here almost bang on 3, which is scarily accurate and on cue with METO forecasts. It's only the lighter front of the band here at the mo, what's coming behind looks a lot heavier - I'd say it's heavy already so what's coming in behind looks lots of fun
  11. I can't believe I'm awake at stupid o'clock but I was woken by the wind rattling the slates, who'd sleep in a loft conversion eh? Clearly not me. It's moderate snow here, no sign of sleetiness either, it's settling and sticking well but it will be impossible to get a measured level in the morning as it's blowing a right hoolie too - drifts could be interesting in the morning.
  12. Afternoon all, I think I’ve possibly slipped over the line of bonkers today with all the excitement of what’s coming our way…drive to work was accompanied by light snow flurries, hooray, thought I, a sign of things to come. I did the decent thing and phoned my boss to warn him of the incoming snow - he’s a QC and I knew he was going to be cloistered in court in London all week, completely oblivious to weather forecasts, suggested it may be a good idea to come home tonight and work from home tomorrow. I went and spread grit up and down the paths/steps at the pensioners housing in the village, checked if they needed shopping or coal stocking up. All the while dreaming of tomorrow’s snowfest… Leaving work, there were a few spots of drizzle coming down, odd thought I, doesn’t bode well. Driving home the cars coming towards me had their lights and wipers on, I could see the Mendip hills in the distance and they were green, not white…I start to get a little concerned that it’s all gone pear shaped. Listening to Steve Wright, he starts talking about the snow and how bad it’s going to be, then he mentions the areas affected….Wales, Midlands and the NORTH WEST!!! I’ve no idea what the other motorists thought at the traffic lights as they witnessed a middle aged woman ranting at the radio whilst banging the steering wheel, “No! I don’t ******** believe it! That’s the last ****** weather forecast I’m ever going to watch!†. So it was with some trepidation that I opened this thread…. I guess Wrighty got it wrong. Hooray! But for a moment there, he got me, so if you’re reading this Mr. Wright, or anyone here knows someone who knows someone, who maybe able to get hold of him, give him a clip round the ear from me for making me think someone had nicked all our snow. I’m going for a lay down, I can’t cope.
  13. Mmmm, not sure I'm liking that picture, that's getting bum clenchingly close to being rain here.
  14. Would now be a good time to remind folks of the stealth snowman competition, or will that jinx it?
  15. I'm putting my house up for sale around Easter time, up in the Mendip's, usually does quite well for snow.......
  16. Thanks folks. It doesn't seem to be peetering out, just hoping it doesn't warm things up around here.
  17. Any clues anyone on what looks to be coming in tonight? The radar has lots of rain heading in our direction, it's currently -1 here, will it be rain, veer off, die away or warm things up here?
  18. Erm, just checked the forecast for here and it's supposed to be dry but cold tonight, then went to the radar to see what temps/dew points etc were looking like and there's an enormous blob of rain heading across the Irish sea, through Wales and heading towards us. Any clues anyone????
  19. Oh goodness, a small world....I'm ex Chippy school too.
  20. Hi Birdman and welcome. I'm from Oxfordshire, grew up about 6 miles from you, moved around a bit as an adult, up to North Yorkshire and back down again until I landed up in Somerset. No idea how old you are but if you're anywhere near as old as me, you'll remember the 81-82 winter up there - I'm keeping everything crossed for a repeat this weekend. Quick question.... do they still put the snow fences up on the Oxford to Banbury road? I remember as a kid they used to go up every year at the start of winter as there was always a period where it could be expected to drift across there.
  21. I don't know if I can cope, I just wish those damn models would stop dithering and make some sort of decision. I'm now banning myself from here until tomorrow, off to play a mind numbing game of solitaire to stop my over active imagination going into over time. Night all, sweet dreams.
  22. Does that make me Jeth, Beth or Bed? I've just done a really sad person, excited thing and totted up the daily amounts of snow forecast on NW extra for this area - 35mm, that's over a foot!!!!!!!!! OMG. I know it can still all go horribly wrong but I'm allowing myself to ignore all common sense and revel in an old woman's dreams of heaven.
  23. Having just finished re-reading 'Frozen in Time', lived through the 1980/81 winter in the Cotswold's and dreamt of a repeat ever since, I just read through this thread......and now I'm expected sleep?????????
  24. I think the low confidence he was talking about was to do with the NAE but the Chief at the METO has dismissed it as being an outlier. They're sticking with their modified version which gives us a good shot at some snow. Ignoring my stupid excitement at the possibilities being shown, we do look likely to get some snow on Friday. The cold air out to the East isn't backing off, in fact seems to be encroaching further West. The front coming in from the Atlantic isn't backing off either. Where those two forces meet will likely get a fair bit of snow, the doubt lays with where that position will be, and whether or not it will be cold enough for snow instead of rain. The current thoughts according to the calmest and one of the most knowledgeable posters on here (John Holmes, ex pro forecaster, ex main forecaster on Netweather) is that it will be cold and staying cold into the foreseeable future.
