  1. Reference to my comment earlier on this thread about this winter being realistically the coldest we can expect in this currrent climate. Thinking about it, we haven't had the best synoptics, yet we are still going to have a cold winter overall, even with a milder February than was expected. Therefore, if we had got better synoptics like we did as recently as February 2005 or March 2006, this winter could have been a potential classic. Bearing this in mind, I think that we have been rather unlucky this year, but reassuring that without the best synoptocs, we can still comfortably get a below average winter season.
  2. Could winter 2008/09 be the coldest we can realistically expect to get in this current climate?
  3. Still snowing moderately here and has settled on grass, cars and some pavements. Wet roads though.
  4. No more ramping from you then Dave this Winter if the models start to paint a snowy picture! Snow quite light and wet but trying to settle on the cars.
  5. Absolutely dry as a bone here. Don't expect to see anything now. Also local Beeb forecast did not look promising for areas south west of London.
  6. Bl*ody typical! Echoes of forecast last Thursday for Friday night with lots of snow for London, for it to get completely downgraded by tea time
  7. Rain, rain, rain here this evening. A far cry from the snow showers forecast on Countryfile for Wednesday onwards! What do we have to look forward to? Perhaps a dusting of snow tomorrow evening, but I ain't holding my breath!
  8. We had a fair bit of snow in my area in early February 1986. Don't know the depths, but there was certainly a good few inches of snow. However, after this we we had little more than flurries up until March 1st when we had another fall. Due to it being such a cold month though, it didn't completely thaw for the remainder of the month. I think the thawing that did occur was caused by the prolonged daytime sunshine. Definately an exceptional month!
  9. Nothing here at the mo. Had some heavy rain earlier occasionally sleety. Don't think I will see any snow until possibly mid week onwards after Tuesday's storm, but this will probably in the form of a few flurries or showers.
  10. I have a feeling that this coming Monday's update will be less inspiring than that forecast, but at least the next week looks like staying cold at the moment.
  11. In the time that I have been following the Met Office seasonal forecasts, IMO, they have been generally very good. If I remember correctly, they didn't do too well forecasting Summer 2003 where I think they went for an average Summer, needless to say what the actual outcome was! Also, their forecast for Summer 2007 was off the mark too. And of course they called this Winter wrong in September and October. However, their general forecasting for the Winter season is pretty good and they also state that they have higher accuracy for their Winter forecasting. Indeed, apart from Winter 2008/09, they have got all Winter's since 2001 pretty much spot on. On balance I would conclude that they are not perfect, but pretty good.
  12. Hasn't snowed in this neck of the woods for a few hours now, but have a slight covering from earlier on. Back roads a little slushy which are becoming rather slippery now and will no doubt be trecherous soon. BBC National Forecast 10.30 very interesting. Darren Bett even seemed to be ramping a bit. He said towards the end of the forecast "Cold weather continuing all next week with risk of snow in southern Britain Monday." He said that with a smile on his face!
  13. Yes, the way PC described it on BBC Weather South East was "low on Monday may produce some sleetyness". None to inspiring. However, the National weather looked more promising for the south on Sunday. Although not much detail at this stage.
  14. Just of interest, Peter Cockcroft on the BBC South East weather forecast said at the end "The good news is, it is likely to stay cold for the rest of the month!" Not often you here that!
  15. Now have lightish sleety snow here in Weybridge and very dark clouds. Perhaps an interesting afternoon to come?
  16. Yes, those places can be snow traps! I've heard many times that Hindhead/Devils Punchbowl has thick snow but with nothing nearby. I remember driving along the Hog's back once and there was thick snow on the ground, but by the time I got to Guildford, there was only just enough to cover the ground.
  17. Still sleety here ATM. Reckon places like Camberley about 10 miles away may see an inch or two before it turns to rain as that area is a little higher than here and often sees a few inches of snow when Woking only gets rain or a dusting. That would also tie in with the MO's warning extension to Hampshire.
  18. Well, from the time I saw it was snowing to the time it started turning to rain was about 35mins. So that could well place me at the top of the leader board! EDIT - Just checked and it's looking sleety now.
  19. Snow turning to rain here now. That's it for the time being.
  20. Absolutely. Hopefully a very exiting week to come.
  21. Ahh well, looks like I missed most of this afternoons snow. No falling snow for the last three hours. As others have said though, the chance of some more snow later this week, although, it looks at the moment to be a wet snow event according to PC on BBC South East forecast.
  22. Here's a few of many photos I took today. Had plenty of time due to being unable to get into work.
