  1. All these reports of the high winds slowing down everyone's travel are surely an exaggeration. I've just seen a bloke on a pushbike doing 80mph.
  2. Just stick your hand out of the window....a few dozen leave will soon come along....you just have to have quick reactions Still gusty here, but not damaging yet.
  3. It's a freight plane. Still bad enough for the pilots.....he's just aborted an attempted landing aswell! My mistake......he landed it....bet they're relieved. Shame he's nowhere near Exeter where he had planned to land.
  4. Thought the wind would never get here....but the stronger gusts seem to now be arriving. Whistling around the house....makes me feel so cosy sat here by the fire (I do feel sorry for you guys who are scared though....I hope you are feeling OK!) Luckily my house was built by my dad some 30 years ago, so I trust it was built well........if it blows down....i'm blaming him.
  5. It helps that Stansted's runway is alinged near enough North/south. It's a lot easier to land in a headwind than a gusty sidewind! I bet there are a lot of angry and fed up passengers around the country tonight!
  6. The (possible) sting jet and the heavy band of rain (squall) are quite separate things, although both give the ability of bringing stronger winds aloft down to the surface. This is what made the damage St Jude caused so localised. Very intense gusts with areas 5 miles up the road wondering what all the fuss was about. You ar right in what you say though, it's something that certainly needs watching closely. I'm not totally convinced that a sting jet has formed but I await with baited breath.
  7. Are you sure? Most of Essex (going by radar information) looks to have had around the 10mm mark. Unless you were refering to the West Country ofcourse, in which case my apologies. They have certainly had it rough down there today!
  8. The best thing is to sing a song.... When it's cold and stormy, and you're feeling a little sick Cuddle up nice and warmy, and play with your little....ahem...actually on seconds thoughts, have a mince pie,
  9. Metoffice now have an early warning out for Friday's storm. Must be manic in that office today!
  10. And for pudding I'll be looking for help from Mr Kipling......as for chocolate....I'm having Terry's.
  11. Appointing a CDM co-ordinator is a legal requirement on all construction sites (with over so many men/working for so long a period.....it's been a while since I did my SMSTS so I can't remember the exact numbers) I'm a QS, and our company sends emails around to all site teams reminding them to secure everything on site before the Christmas break. You would think it would be common sense but the number of sites I walk past with materials stacked on scaffolds just waiting to be picked up by the wind.
  12. Really hoping the power doesn't go off here. Being in such a rural location, when it does go off it can be off for days......8 days last time! Anyone ever tried doing a whole Christmas dinner on a camping stove?
  13. Dirk? What an odd name. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5znn5bMDVkg Metoffice now increasingly mentioning the possibility of Severe gales getting a little way inland now. I'm 20 miles from the coast....could possible see 70mph this evening tonight!?
  14. It very much depended where you were. We recorded a gust of 78mph here. The road out of my village had 8 trees down. The local Golf Club is still clearing up after having over 40 large trees down and dozens of smaller ones. It was the most damaging period of winds we have had here in 20 years. Just because you didn't see the strongest of the winds doesn't mean it was the same everywhere else!
  15. Starting wet and windy in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of England. A quiet and frosty start for the rest of England and Wales with fog and mist patches lifting through the day. Rain petering out through the day in Scotland and the North West, but remaining drab and dreary. Temperatures in Scotland, North West, Northern Ireland 8-12C, 4-8C for the rest of England and Wales.
  16. Currently -2C here with thick fog and a hard frost. Came a cropper at the pub when I put my pint down only for it to slide off the table
  17. Ipswich again (right outside my work) http://www.spottedinipswich.co.uk/gallery/img1059.htm
  18. Went down to Aldeburgh (seems about 100 odd other people had the same idea!) Waves are just about hitting the sea wall at the far end. Not as high as 2007 when they were overtopping it. The wind was almost calm. I think that's helped.
  19. Dance East in Ipswich looks like it is close to getting flooded! https://twitter.com/apirie/status/408746585481572354/photo/1
  20. The Lowestoft Weather Facebook page is saying this: "Lowestoft town is under water. Currently 4 Fire engines on rescue missions the RNLI inshore rescue service have just arrived at south Lowestoft fire station. A major incident in Lowestoft is now ongoing."
  21. Latest from Lowestoft sounds bad: "Lowestoft town is under water. Currently 4 Fire engines on rescue missions the RNLI inshore rescue service have just arrived at south Lowestoft fire station. A major incident in Lowestoft is now ongoing."
  22. Yep, 1955 was high tide for Cromer, so it SHOULD slowly decrease now. Even still, there can be a sight delay with storm surges.
  23. Southwold webcam here: http://www.norfolklive.org/camera/suffolk-secrets.html Looks a tad choppy! PS. It toggles slowly between different views, so you might have to wait a while before you see the one looking out to sea!
