Hi n york moors where is your exact location? I don't think anywhere in Cumbria had a frost sunday night. A thin veil of cloud invaded the county and prevented one forming.

He lives in a small village called Westerdale, just SW of neighbouring larger village Castleton, great location!

A bit further south here we fell to 0.8c and the missus' car had frozen over. We also had a nice inversion with fog/mist lower down.

-0.7C here currently, wouldn't be surprised if it drops a bit more at sunrise. (often happens mysteriously).
It's been below freezing since about 03:30 so quite white out there.

I saw NYCCs Chopgate weather station fell to -1.1c at 5am, that's the coldest I could find this morning after yourself and Low Mill at -0.9c.

  3. Today has been a lovely Autumns day, had our coldest temp of the season this morning at 5.2c. Headed to Scarborough early this afternoon where it was beautifully sunny but very chilly in the wind! We then went for a walk in the North York Moors to Mallyan Spout for the first time near Goathland (Heartbeat village) which is a hidden gem :D

  4. Personally I would like lots of brief cold snaps spread out throughout the winter, each delivering a nice amount of snowfall. Therefore never getting bored and always exciting model watching. As much as I loved Dec 2010, there wasn't any cold/snow early 2011 so a cold snap lasting around a week in each month would be lovely :)

Hoping this thread may see a bit more action come the weekend - still a bit off, but the models are suggesting a possible widespread ground frost over northern parts early hours of Sunday, with the usual frost prone spots seeing an air frost. Conditions do look conducive, uppers will be cold enough and winds look like falling light with, much will depend on cloud cover and if we see any showery activity. We shall see.

Early hours of Monday brought a min of 0.1 degrees in Aboyne just shy of an air frost.. so we still await the first sub freezing min of the season, quite late this year, I'm not including August as I class the 1 Sept as the start of the new season.

Yes this weekend looks like we may see the coldest temps of the Autumn, might go frost chasing :cold:

  6. A warm day at Filey Brigg? Well they aren't many of those a year :p

I live 25 miles from there and visit the coast often during summer, love having endless beautiful coastline to yourself. Only problem is its usually 5c colder than where I live, as much as I love the coastline I dont think I could live there. Thanks for the pics and glad you enjoyed your visit :)

  7. We had a high of 13c and a low of 9c giving a daily mean of 11c which is the coldest so far this Autumn. Rained most of the day but only 2mm fell.

If GFS stays as it is we could see the first air/ground frost since August in places on Saturday morning.IMG_7391.GIF

Hopes dashed! Still, better chances than southern Ireland

With your elevation you will be looking at needing upper 850s of -6/7c or below during convective events, the North Sea snow making machine really is a thing of beauty in winter. Its one of the bonuses of living in the NE but unfortunately the wind has only briefly come from that direction in recent winters. Even in Northerly topplers which mainly gives the wishbone effect, we can still see a dusting in places :)

Heres a few snaps of the winter just gone with the snow machine at work. IMG_7388.JPGIMG_7389.JPGIMG_7390.JPG

You need look at the wind, there was a westerly between 5mph and 10mph here all night but in the bottom of Farndale (just over the hill) it was practically calm all night.
I'm in a valley but not right at the bottom, plus we are a wider more open valley the wind can get in more.

All very fascinating! We fell to 8c this morning, we are also exposed slightly to the wind here being on the edge of a hillside 30m above the River Derwent. Monday morning looks like another cold one, poss a touch cooler than last night so we may well see the first ground frost of the season in places.
