  1. Thanks for the update @chionomaniac. I follow this thread and the conversations on twitter but unfortunately have little understandings on the meanings and implications of the warmings/displacements etc and do find it quite confusing when trying to learn when some are touting this is a major SSW event. I feel like unless the likes of yourself, Tony and Andrej get excited then I won't be getting excited myself. Hopefully thought as you suggest we will still see some positive trop affect.
  2. Not far been doing this model watching for 10 years, been here too many times, I don't even tell the missus about the snow until its within 72 hours. Fingers crossed tho, there is still time for Feb to salvage this "winter"
  3. Maybe he owns the GFS and swears by it? Still a long way to go WC and ECM has over amplified a few times this winter, a mid point could be met between GFS and ECM which could be cold but crap for snow, if UKMO starts to draw it in and then eventually onto the hi res models then I will fix my security light
  4. I'm also trying to remain positive, there's always a lot of talk about as we get into Feb/March snow not hanging around for very long due to the increasing strength of the Sun. This of course is true but my fascination with snow has always been when its falling, to me its the best part, whether it be lampost watching or out driving watching it in the headlights, of course I enjoy it sticking around for a while but I'd still be very happy to see a 12 hours of heavy snow fall outside my window even if it was to melt 24 hours later. Just looking back on similar winters I'l always remember winter 07/08 which in York we saw no snowfall throughout the winter months, however on the 23rd March (easter Sunday) we saw a short potent Northerly toppler that dropped around 3 inches of snow.
  5. @Winter Cold Heres the chart for the 29th Jan last year. Not to dissimilar to the above chart. The GFS op and control offer some cold from the North into early Feb although ECM is having none of it, although the NH pattern looks to be improving somewhat. Il leave the MJO, SSW and AAM mumbo jumbo to the pros and stick to my snow forecasting and chasing
  6. Next weekend looks like our next snow interest point, cold PM shot with uppers around -6/7c on a very strong W/NW wind. Something we saw alot of last winter and some areas did surprisingly well. Rather marginal for low ground but depending on the time of day and precip this could easily change. @Winter Cold didn't you see a significant fall of snow from a PM flow last winter?
  7. Coldest night of the Winter so far last night with a low of -3.6c which closes the curtains on this colder spell of weather we have had for the last week. Readily approaching the 1 year mark since the last day of lying snow, although hopes remain high for February and March. Thread is likely to remain quiet for a while now but I hope to see it buzzing again soon.
  8. Yes Im awaiting the 12z's with interest, really need to start seeing some momentum towards the next cold snap as early Feb still holds the opportunity of very cold snowy weather. Hills round here still hanging onto their snow cover which has been there for nearly a week now, would of been a great cold snap in this area had it not being a 200m + job. Lets hope 12z GFS follows the 6z and the Euros improve.
  9. Really looking forward to Spring!! Took up Golf about 5 years ago and before that I never used to look forward to the end of winter, but this winter all the courses have been closed for weeks on end due to flooding. A cold February with snowfall then straight onto an early Spring please
  10. What's your exact location? Is there much near Shadwell, Scarcroft, Wike area?
  11. Indeed, this winter so far is even worse that 13/14 which was an absolute shocker, its now been 3 years since any measurable snowfall and that includes Vale of York/Pickering, and most of East Yorkshire excluding the wolds. Areas to the N, S and W have seen something at least decent. Our luck has to change eventually @reef
  12. Brightest echoes around Leeds now, is the radar lying or is there moderate snow?
  13. Yes we are stuck in no mans land really, we were laughing in 2009/10/11/12. Our time will come buddy, in the meantime I'm eyeing up houses to buy in the Wolds/NYMs.
  14. Really difficult to work out amounts for you westies tonight, but one thing you can be certain is whatever falls is likely to stick around for quite some time with temps barely above freezing the next few days. So every flake is critical, good luck!!!
  15. Good luck to all those out West, I had a light snow shower overnight that left a very small dusting. Would be nice for something more significant at home for once, but at least I got my hills. Hope to see some pics later
  16. Don't think il see anything at home tonight, but as you say the NYM's may see a top up. I'm lucky that I can drive as if i didn't i can see the snow topped Wolds and Moors from my garden and id be going insane. Deffo going to have to consider moving into the Moors. 7cm here in the last 3 winters! Depressing stuff. Hope you westies get your fix soon
  17. Seen as I yet again missed out marginally on snow again at home I decided to treat myself to a big fat snowfest. Walked up to Urra Moor in the North York Moors which is the highest point at a decent 454m asl. I noticed that this area had received the highest accumulations yesterday, I have no idea of the actual depth of snow because there was so much drifting but it was up to my knees most of the time, the bridleway sign in one of the photos are about 6ft tall and as you can see its half covered, highest drifts against walls around 4-5ft. Temps below freezing and clear blue skies, Il let the photos speak for themselves
  18. Spent the day in the North York Moors, starting off this morning on the west side near Sutton Bank above 300m asl and there was severe drifting at times and visibility near to nothing at times, in the afternoon I headed to the highest area of Dalby Forest around 200m and the snow was more marginal here with huge flake accumulating quickly. Anyone in the Middlesbrough/Teeside area I would recommend getting yourself up there this weekend in the sunshine as it will be stunning!
  19. After my snow tour today (150miles!) Ive come home to find out Ive missed a covering of snow by about 2 miles, there was snowcover all the way from Dalby Forest through Pickering and Malton and the snow decided to give my village a miss. As we are slightly further west the more intense precip that brought a covering to many down below just clipped us to the east. Mind you theres a few flakes left on the grass
  20. I'm In Dalby Forest it's amazing!!! Only a few inch at the top but the flakes are huuuuges and accumilating quickly.
  21. Been doing the rounds on the road cameras, it's been snowing above 200m in the Dales and Moors, but not settling so probably lying snow above 300-400m. From now on the snowlike will start to drop so if we can get some heavy precip those around 200m might get lucky, MetO precip charts show precip varying in intensity over the region untill leaving the eastCoast around 6pm tomorrow. Off to bed for now with one eye open, heading to the moors tomorrow
  22. Metoffice is forecasting sleet at my location tomorrow morning at 50m which coincides with the cold air wrapping around the North west side of the low, this is when lower levels have the best chance of seeing some snowfall. Looking a bit further ahead there is a chance of some NE areas of our region seeing snow showers for a short period Friday night and into Saturday, strong winds slightly east of North with -8c uppers overnight may well throw up some surprises for those east of York.
  23. The flow is mainly west of North, keeping the showers out to sea but as @Geordiesnow pointed out above on Friday and into Saturday the winds veer N- NNE for a short window which could see eastern parts see some snow, especially in the overnight period. I wouldn't be surprised to see places East of the A169 such as Dalby with a a covering of snow on Saturday.
