  1. Very interesting at the moment, and difficult to call but it could be that the snow from the front to the South may just meet up with the showers coming in from the East and we end up with only a short break in snow falling.
  2. Increased precipitation showing on radar out to North East, East and South East. Looks to me like all parts of Yorkshire could do well this evening and tonight! Good luck everyone. ??
  3. Travelled into work in Chesterfield from home in Barnsley. Left early to get in front of worst of traffic. Roads not good in Barnsley even main roads covered in snow and slush. Slide roads really poor. M1 ok in the main but parts of journey where outside lane was very slushy after recent snow. Not quite so much snow in Chesterfield but light snow at the moment. Looks like Yorkshire should get quite a few more showers today, so could make journey home interesting this evening!
  4. Is that a Radar image or a forecast of precipitation?
  5. Interesting. Euro4 12z looks fairly closely aligned to the current image. Which then goes on to this... Then this... And finally this...
  6. I've been thinking exactly the same regarding the current track of the precipitation. It's going to have to change direction or expand considerably to hit most of Yorkshire. At the current rate I'd day North West Yorks and then into a county not to be named in a Yorkshire thread. ?
  7. I think whoever created this image might just have been on the pop... (copied from Facebook). Does this count as fake news! ?
  8. Yes, both GFS and NMM move it further North West maybe just clipping Northern most parts of West Yorkshire. Euro4 still has it hitting land near N Yorks Moors/Wolds then through East Yorkshire, Eastern areas of West Yorkshire then South Yorkshire into Peak District. Still some uncertainty and likely to be a case of Radar watching for the exact track.
  9. Yes, I've seen the pics and stories before. It's a fantastic location but clearly a need to be ery careful in winter! Although we don't live locally we have rented a holiday cottage in Hutton Le Hole in February for the last 10 years or so, so have seen all weathers up there from snow, to thick fog and brilliant sunshine. One of the most amazing was driving up from Hutton in thick fog to get just beyond the Lion on the Ridge when we emerged into clear blue skies and we were walking around with fog at our feet!
  10. Photo of road past the Lion Inn on Monday 5th Feb, taken from the comfort of our Volvo XC60 AWD parked in the pub car park! And yes, there were quite a few rear wheel drive cars and no I wouldn't have gone up there without the AWD! ?
  11. We were up in Goathland a few weeks ago at the beginning of Feb whilst staying in Hutton Le Hole for a week. We saw snow every day and most in Goathland (3-4 inches) on the Wednesday. Lovely village, you are very lucky to live in such a lovely location! ?
  12. Here is a link. Look for the A169 Blue Bank cameras, which are in Sleights on the edge of the North Yorks Moors just inland from Whitby. https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/road-cameras-and-weather-conditions
  13. I did wonder that also. Think I'll just set to ignore!
  14. You either need to take a deep breath and look at the reality of the situation (nothing has happened yet and we/'the professionals' are interpreting weather models) or alternatively you need to find another hobby instead of following the weather. Constant tantrums like a pre-school toddler aren't going to change anything! Yes we all love cold weather and snow, otherwise I doubt we would be here, but these are the best synoptics for years and certainly the best since I joined Netweather in 2009. As always with these situations where convective snow showers are involved some people will see much more accumulated snow than others. Some might get lucky under a streamer and get 4-8 inches whilst 20 miles down the road there may be nothing. It was similar in 2010, in Barnsley we did quite well and got about 8 inches but my parents in Chesterfield measured 17 inches in the top in their wheelie bin! And in all likelihood it will be the same this time as the wind moves between SE and NE, offering most parts of our region some snow in some of the days ahead. Friday continues to look interesting with a possible huge amount of snow, but it may be that is doesn't quite make it to our region. Time will tell! Either way, I say bring it on and let's enjoy the cold and maybe snow! ?
  15. Agreed that the warnings are a guide and subject to change but all short range high res models seem to be taking the heaviest snow through the East of the region, aligned to the Amber warning area. As stated above, this started as a North East event and has gradually move further South with each run. Any more Southward movement and it will miss Yorkshire completely. Let's hope it's been overdone and we see a slight North/West adjustment.
  16. Looks excellent @cheese. Another good update from knocker for the Tuesday event. Yorkshire looks like getting a direct hit as it passes through from North East to South Wales. Another very cold night and a severe frost Tuesday morning but the much mentioned wave feature tracks south west overnight and through Tuesday morning and brings more concentrated snow showers along the route as indicated with the charts.
  17. I'm sticking with views from the likes of Steve Murr, Nick Sussex, Nick L, Nick F, Chionomaniac and in particular Catacol, who has had this cold spell nailed for the last month. His latest update as follows: This is not going to breakdown on Friday. Anyone with any weather watching experience knows what is going to happen when that low hits the cold... and even if slightly milder uppers were pulled into the mix we are talking a temporary moderation to the heady heights of around -4 as per ECM but still off a continental feed which is a snowmaker. I see no breakdown at the end of the week at all. GFS run is a counter intuitive response. As Nick correctly said the other night - GFS has a well observed tendency to overblow these scenarios. We can happily debate whether it will hit and slide away over France... but push up through the flow with much milder air? More chance of Scotland winning the Rugby World Cup in 2019. All are going for the low staying further South than modelled by GFS, and favouring ECM Southerly track. ??
  18. That was my thought re GFS, but ECM seems to have it further South and therefore crossing Yorkshire. Also, interesting update from Roger J Smith in the MOD thread over night... Gradual increase in North Sea streamer production through Monday with an episode of heavy snow moving into northeast England late Monday and spreading to central counties by Tuesday, widespread near-blizzard conditions in Midlands, Yorkshire and northeast to Wednesday, more isolated streamers in southeast but some locally heavy. Let's hope ECM and RJS are correct!
  19. I'm liking the update from Knocker in the Short Range thread. He identified a feature around Norway a few days ago that will bring more persistent snow on Tuesday. He said at the time that he thought the feature would move South West through England. His latest update regarding the track is as follows: According to the ecm, and I would want this confirmed by the METO, the NE coast through the north midlands to south Wales. Based on that I'd say Yorkshire is in the direct firing line! ??
  20. Paul H is most definitely a coldie reined in...have you never read the books he co-wrote with that other well known coldie Ian McCaskill.... The clue is in the book titles 'Frozen in Time' and 'Frozen Britain'. ?
  21. Latest on the various models shows a mainly rain event for tomorrow. Higher ground may get lucky.
  22. Sheffield/Chesterfield, if it still exists by the time it gets this far East.
  23. We've been staying in Hutton Le Hole over the last week (about 9 miles from Thornton) and have seen snow every day, including this morning as we were leaving). Check out the pics above and a couple of pages earlier. If you want to head over the moors to increase chance of seeing snow there are a couple of options. Either drive out from Pickering to Whitby over Fylingdales Moor (visit the village of Goathland) or drive out through Hutton Le Hole towards Castleton (and pop in for lunch at The Lion pub on Blakey Ridge (about 400m asl). We did both this week and were glad to have the 4 wheel drive of our Volvo XC60!
