I've just come across these links. Perhaps not 100% relevant, but it all ties in all the same.

Because my bedroom is a converted loft with a window that doesn't shut properly. The temperature ranges in here are huge.
During the summer it can quite easily get up into the 30's, during Spring and Autumn its usually around 15-22c but during the winter I've known it to get down as low as 1c, yes, 1c. I have a heater which heats it up perfectly, but one day last winter I decided to turn it off to see just how cold it could get.
Its currently 19c in here and I haven't had the heater on. I'm generally fine if the temperature is between 17-24c. Any higher or lower I get uncomfortable.

Can anyone give me a brief overview on how to forecast a streamer during the winter, and what types of charts I should be looking at to do so? My current understand is that it has something to do with convergent lines?
Thanks in advance.

the jet i think is affected by the gulf stream. the jet was to the south, but i think it was the gulf stream moving up to greenland not sure. confusing to say the least.

It's definitely interesting. With all the articles recently about the Gulf Stream stopping, the sequence you posted above does make me quite excited. Maybe someone more experienced can voice their opinion about it, because I don't really know too much about the gulf.
-
that would be the point. iceland and greenland would warm up quite a lot if the gulf stream did stop or weaken. just like in the last winter. the gulf stream was further south while greenland and iceland had a very mild winter
Wasn't it the Jet Stream that was further South? Even so, those images are remarkable.

Light snowfall just started here in N-Kent - Looks like theres some slightly heavier snow not too far away from me now.

Hi.
I realise from other posts that no one can ever be 100% certain where and when snow will fall but can anyone tell me if they think we will get snow here, we are between Faversham and Canterbury. My son is supposed to be going away on Friday with the school so am advi knowledgeable avidly weather watching for him, unfortunately for you guys that means asking you as I am far from knowledgeable.
Thanks in advance.

You might see a few snow showers tomorrow which could give a light dusting, and perhaps a couple of CM through Thursday and into Friday. I shouldn't think it'd be too severe though
Hi Yamkin,do you think that the snow may reach Brighton? just looked at the rain today site and not showing any ppn here tonight
Its hard to tell which areas will see the snow showers - I think your best chance will be on Thursday. Its looking likely that we'll see a convergence line setup feeding in frequent heavy snow showers across the South-East from about Mid-Morning onwards.
-
There was a snow shower while I was on Chatham earlier today, didn't last very long though.
I think just about anywhere across our region could see some snow showers tomorrow, forecasting snow showers is very annoying, because some places could get loads whilst other places get none The Northern half of the region definitely more at risk though.
I wouldn't be surprised if some areas wake up to a light dusting come morning, theres quite a few showers brewing in the North Sea, these will begin to push Southwards over the next few hours. Most of them will probably weaken and die out, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a few of them making it down.
-
Really? Precipitation charts dont back that up
The models arnt usually very good with predicting showers. During the last cold spell the models were predicting light snow showers for Eastern parts only, these turned out to be heavy, and pushed fairly far inland in reality.
-
Just watched the latest SE today forecast on the BBC website, and Michael Fish was calling for a period of heavy snow Thursday into Friday, and said some areas could see upto 15cm, obviously this being over higher ground though.
-
So the infamous "8th Feb" may still yet produce the goods !?
Possibly. Personally I'm siding with the UKMO and ECM this time around.
-
Must admit im thinking the same! That blob over the north Netherlands could be it but then the winds are currently NNE so in theory that should just slip down into northern France. I was expecting to see some massive band heading for us the way Francis was talking on sky earlier .
Unless, as you question something is going to pep up over the north sea. Any have any idea if something is going to appear??
I just can't see it!
Matt
Just got back from driving down a country lane, the snow was drifting over 5 feet of snow in places, i'm not exagerating, the wind was picking up the snow from the fields and blowing it around, the snow was about 1 foot level on the roads in places and we had to dig a ladies car out of the snow to get her going again. The snow is incredible here in North Kent, i'm home and away from the fields now, and we have an easy 6-7 inches of snow on the ground
-
I know I'm not really in the main zone - But how much can I expect here in North Kent tonight and tomorrow? Is it worth me staying up? Thanks
-
but even if they do survice the treck it looks as tho they will be a bit too far west? anyone agree
I agree - Perhaps passing just to the North West of London. But then we could see a minor change in wind direction that would change all that, all we can do is watch them to see where they go.
-
Thames streamer anyone? now looking quite likely.
The next half hour will tell. Best warn my kids who are still up in town.
I think it's tired of the A12
I hope so, this area of London usually does very well in Thames Streamers scenario's. I can't sleep so I'm glad theres a little weather excitement to stop me dieing of bordom.

These showers are really intensifying as they move inland. Already had a few light snow showers here. Bring it on
Yeah its certainly good news, what better way to start the new year than to see a covering of snow
-
Snowing lightly here in SE London (I really wish I was at home tonight, looks like they'll be seeing some heavier more organised snow shortly, although saying that the showers do appear to be making it inland into the London area, so I might be lucky and get a light covering, we'll see)
-
Not this time as the wind is going to be shifting to the north, north east.
Shame - I'm heading here from very snowy Kent down to London a little later today, would have been nice to see some snow there too
-
Haha. Hope it doesn't cause the air around you to be too warm, what with all that steam/heat it throws out!
As for snow yesterday. Not a lot to be honest. We had small flakes falling from about midday, blowing in the wind. Then we had a heavy spell of snow around 2.45pm, which lasted about 30 mins, before turning to rain for the rest of the day. Didn't settle on anything.
What about you? Any snow showers yesterday?
Anyone care to comment on Rob M's forecast on the Beeb last night?
Chance of a marginal channel low type situation on Monday and warming up?
About the same as you - We had a heavier spell of snow at around 2:30ish which started to settle on the grass but then it stopped, we had another heavy spell of snow around 4ish but that quickly turned to sleet and then rain.
Robs forecast was fantastic last night, although this morning I think there are fears that the worst of the show will shift Westwards slightly, I think we'll only really know when we see it developing on the radar
-
Hi Daniel.
You are just across the Thames to me, about 3 miles away. Are you near that monstrousity of a power station?!
I too share you concerns we may just see sleet/wet snow. Let's hope all the synoptics work in our favour eh.
There's nothing worse than looking across the Thames and seeing a blanket of white, when you have nothing.
Yeah I live practically right next to it haha, how much snow did you see yesterday? The radar showed snow for you yesterday but it seemed to break up as it crossed the Thames which was quite annoying.
-
Yes but on the other hand , the warmer sea temps are more likely to have deeper convection with the cold temps / dewpoints!. They did say though even on bbc that it may start off as rain/sleet but will all be snow by midnight!.
p.s I used to live on the isle o grain , chattendean(?) that was a onions hole though
Blimey small world - Chattendean is a little further inland than I am so I'm sure that area will see plenty of snow. I was down in Strood a little while ago and there was a fairly heavy snow shower there.
-
Why? , already had some snow flurries in herne bay. Does that make you feel better?
Whereabouts are you though
Haha yes it does, but surely the warmer sea temperatures will mean its more likely to be wet snow?
On the Isle of Grain
-
I really hope being here on the N Kent coast wont affect my chances too much, I'm not very hopeful though
-
I suggest we ignore Dew Point predictions from the GFS this morning.
They have me at around 1-2c for about this time, and in reality its -0.9c
