  1. I recall going down to the Newbury area for an outdoor concert near Basingstoke during the summer of 2005 - the day of the concert was hot, and there were storms that night, but the following day was just awful. Being further inland than I'm used to, there was no breeze, so the air just seemed to become stagnant. We were going to return the following day, and were searching for a way to get onto or near water to cool ourselves off. First off, we tried the Kennet and Avon Canal, but it was shut, so drove through Reading (where the sunlight reflecting from the concrete and glass made it feel like a furnace) to take a boat trip on the Thames. Of course, that was also shut!
  2. My nearest local (amateur) station on Weather Underground, which seems to be fairly accurate when compared with official figures, is showing 32.1C and 36% humidity.
  3. First of the light cloud appearing here in South Norfolk. Can anyone tell me where I might find temperature and humidity data for Norwich from yesterday to compare with today's figures, please?
  4. Some fairly impressive cells heading this way on radar - I'd take rain minus sferics, actually.
  5. Sad to hear of the passing of a member - R.I.P. Conditions here today have been superb, although the breeze, which was light earlier, picked-up during the afternoon.
  6. That Western band is getting rather more lively as it's moving into the more unstable air - might yet be something on the way?
  7. Agreed - it does appear to mark what might be referred-to by our storm-chase tour leaders as a dry line (sort of?) Anyway it's been a bit of a damp squib here - Dad woke up around 7.30 and heard a storm pass in the distance, and we had a weak storm pass to our west once I was awake later-on. From NW radar, it appears that the most vigorous storms followed two distinct paths - one through the west of the region, heading-up through west Norfolk, and the other (yours, Matt, and the one that "cloudsabove" saw) moved up the North Sea coast after affecting Sussex and the Thames Estuary.
  8. We had a couple of water irises in pots in our new wildlife pond blown over, despite the fact that they were fully submerged. I say old chap - don't forget those of us north of London!
  9. Sorry for not responding - events somewhat overtook me. I'm well-used to the lag on any radar system, and that couldn't have been the cause, as there was nothing shown anywhere near my location within + or - 20 minutes or so.
  10. Can anyone explain why it was raining steadily here a few minutes ago, yet NW radar showed us in quite a sizable gap between these showery pulses?
  11. Same here - a few rumbles and a couple of bright flashes while the Grand Prix re-run was on.
  12. Most unexpected for some to have had snow earlier. Chilly but dry and bright here today.
  13. Generally sunny with some mid-level cloud (mainly cumulus and stratocumulus).
  14. We had a brief sleet/snow shower around 1/2 hour ago, which must have been that radar echo you saw, Matt. Though it didn't lay, it was a welcome sign of the colder, lower dew point, more convective air mass, which is also evident in the disappearance of the cumuloform clouds of this morning. Much clearer skies now with signs of convective clouds - almost a taste of what we might see this summer!
  15. Bright here, with cumulus/stratocumulus and sunny intervals. Ppn. froze overnight but rapidly thawed, so roads etc. weren't too bad.
  16. Wymondham weather station on Wunderground is showing 0.9C and a dw point of -2C - is this rather low?
  17. Our last shower was rain, but it's now green on NW radar, suggesting that it should be wintry at least, maybe snow.
  18. Might I ask a question of Nick F, Paul and our other more experienced regional members, please? At present, there is quite a bit of rain water/melted ice pellets on the ground. Our local lunchtime forecast was as vague and useless as ever, but I'm wondering whether it's likely to freeze overnight leaving icy roads tomorrow morning. Any thoughts?
  19. I think it's actually a matter of high-latitude blocking. Those notable winters in this part of the country (2010, 2012-13) were marked by blocking High pressure areas around Greenland, which we haven't really had this year.
