  1. Late-90s to 2005 were pretty lousy, but not utterly snowless here. I recall the winter of '99-00 included some snow (I was at our local college completing my A-levels and I recall there being a couple or three days of there being snow on the ground.
  2. In general, I agree with your point, but I don't think that anticipating some cold weather with a bit of snow after two warm, almost snowless winters in the South is that unreasonable.
  3. Ian, just to reinforce a question that was posed on the previous page - is there any known upper limit for how long a setup (i.e. that which we have at present) can last? I appreciate that there is possibly an infinitesimally-small probability of it lasting for any length of time, but at what point would you and your colleagues feel this probability reduces to a point where it an reasonably be discounted? What I'm getting-at is: are the cries of "Winter's over!" in any way valid (not that I've previously subscribed to that view at this stage)?
  4. Indeed. It may be a bit premature to declare "winter over" as one poster has in the MOD thread, but there seems little prospect of anything wintry in our part of the country before the New Year. I wonder how long it's been since we had three consecutive winters with large parts of the southern half of England seeing no lying snow lingering for more than 12 hours? Here, for example, the winter of 2013/14 saw wet snow falling but not sticking (and barely any frosts either). 2014/15 was better, with fewer storms (and no east coast storm surge if I consider events away from my immediate locality) and more frosts. We even had a couple of inches of snow on the grass, though it lasted all of 3 hours.
  5. Brief burst of sun and some clear sky after a hideous first 2/3 of the day. Latest on MOD thread is a return to last week's weather in our part of the world, but worrying amounts of rain for the north-west.
  6. Dislikes: Anticyclonic gloom in autumn and winter; excessive heat (more than three days consecutively above 30C or any single day above 33C) and humid nights in summer. Likes: Variable, interesting weather that doesn't stay the same for too long; warm summer weather (mid-20s Celcius); occasional Atlantic gales and rain in autumn without being destructive; clear, crisp winter conditions with a few spells of snow. In short, nearly everything in moderation.
  7. I do use Wunderground in order to ascertain my local conditions - I'm referring to uploading information to this new site.
  8. IMO, it's fine if you have a home weather station, as you can upload actual data, but most of us (who lack such a system) are only going to be able to provide vague observations (cloudy, foggy, rain etc.), which I don't think is of much use. I also don't know whether the input is used by the Met Office or BBC forecasters or whether it's just social media.
  9. Cloud, similar to that which Matt described, is thinning here. Pity it won't be long before dark.
  10. Pretty foggy earlier but lovely now. Last night's fog was very patchy, though, by this morning, it seemed more homogeneous.
  11. Patches of dense mist had formed by around 7.00 PM after a decent day in terms of brightness.
  12. It would appear that, after giving us a six-month autumn this past couple of years, the weather is attempting to give us a six-month cloudy summer this winter!
  13. Very much so, Lauren fortunately, today is compensating us to a degree with sun and a few wispy cirrus here.
  14. Same here. PPN seems to be sliding along the front in a S-N direction, so we've missed the worst so far. Edit - first band has passed through - pretty wet outside.
  15. I think the moderators wanted this thread to be similar to the other regional threads - slow-paced, quite dry and straightforward in terms of only mentioning current meteorological conditions. Another cloudy day here with some quite heavy rain at times after a wet day yesterday.
  16. Much the same here, Matt, and little sign of a change in the near future.
  17. Poured with rain here around midday (not really forecasted) with a fair amount od standing water on the roads, but dried out during the afternoon. Cloudy all day, though, with only a few hints of sun.
  18. Last winter in the east was only slightly improved from 2013/14 - my area had lying snow, but it was around 1 cm and it lasted around 2 hours.
  19. More long-range prognosticating from WeatherWeb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT2VCLiAKYo
  20. Lovely photo! I've been trying to identify the species, but haven't been able to do so as yet.
  21. I think there was a slight frost this morning, as I was up early to attend an event.
