  1. There doesn't appear to be any barbeques taking place in our neighborhood this evening. Oh dear, what could the matter be?
  2. Wow, thunder an' lightning an' stuff right here in S.Yorks. That storm must've got lost or summat.
  3. You're not alone - there's millions of us, despite what anyone 'on the other side' would have you believe. Summer has nothing going for it and is fraught with unpleasantness and woe at every turn. Not to worry - it's all over bar the shouting. Having had to be up at 0430 every day this week, it's astonishing how quickly the daylight is losing its pernicious grip, and how that 'summer feel' has evaporated. Just before setting out at the beginning of the week, there was enough light to see in the house... today necessitated switching on the lights. It's ace!
  4. Yes it really has gotten beyond a joke now. Can't remember when I last didn't feel lethargic, clammy, headachey and generally miserable. Probably some time in April.
  5. Yes please - I'm now as heartily sick and tired of featureless (or very nearly featureless) blue ones as CM must be of seeing snow.
  6. It might be boring to you - familiarity breeds contempt an' all that, but even so it cannot, cannot be as boring as featureless blue skies. Ever.
  7. Dunno about global cooling but after what, 30-odd years of being told we're warming, I've yet to feel the effects of that, too. What utter, utter cobblers we are fed.
  8. Long days and short nights are a problem everywhere at these latitudes.
  9. No it's on the right side after being on the wrong side for months - finally! Real dark in the morning now, at the time I have to be up anyway. It's wonderful to wake up gently without the infernal sun searing my retinas and getting the day off to a bad start. Mighty cool this morning, too. Almost autumnal, even.
  10. Oh I see what you mean now - guess it does feel like a bit of a comedown for heat lovers, just like it did for us coldies when the temp rose to the dizzy heights of 0C in late 2010! I think you've all done mighty well this summer - hope August can redress the balance! Edit: only having a laugh - not trying to start a squabble!
  11. The story of the summer so far. I'm going on a classic vehicle rally tomorrow - perhaps that is the day, despite all expectations, that the rains will come. Ah who cares, I'll still enjoy it,assuming it's not cancelled....
  12. All that lovely rain milling around over the UK, but entirely predictably we stayed bone dry. Ridiculous. Y'know I could fall into the ocean and come out dry.
  13. Or maybe he's as sensitive to low temperatures as I am to warmth - but I do agree that he's being a little melodramatic.
  14. I have a lava lamp on in the winter - can't sleep without it. Don't bother in the height of summer 'cos the natural light swamps it!
  15. Ha - we knew you would yield eventually! Power cuts seemed to be part of everyday life when I was a kid, almost forgot about those. They too added to the fun but back then we didn't have computers, microwaves, colour telly and lots of other electronic devices we take for granted nowadays. Always had loads of candles at the ready - twas great!
  16. It was all part of the fun - 'modern' winters hold no fear for me, and 2010 with all modern comforts and conveniences was nuthin', absolutely nuthin' compared to the hardships of yesteryear. Best bit was getting to be close to the meagre little coal fire at night with some hot choc before climbing between frozen sheets in a frozen bedroom and contemplating that things could actually be a whole lot worse, and appreciating what one had. Crazy I know but I loved it then, and even now lament how easy winter life is. Always found summer tedious and boring even then.
  17. My childhood in a nutshell, except the crying for summer like a baby bit... loved every second of it! From aged 8 onwards I was the sole carer for my poorly dad and I did everything, in case anyone thinks I'm looking back with rose (or frost) tinted spectacles. And we'd no money - I was the one walking to school in snow and slush with holes in my shoes. Getting half a ton of coal in with shovel and wheelbarrow in the snow, one little coal fire to heat a big ol' draughty house with rotten single-glazed windows which would get half an inch of ice on the inside during freaky winters, going for groceries two miles away with my coupla canvas shopping bags and getting stuff on the slate etc. Times were hard, really hard but I knew no better, but honestly I wouldn't change anything.
  18. I went to the Lake District on me mo'bike 11th August 1995 and made the mistake of wearing a black helmet and black leathers. Thought my head was going to liquify I did, and could not remove the leathers cos' of sweat... definitely 30c+ that day.
  19. The 3rd of August for me, but the key date is the 12th - the glorious 12th- when the sun is still below the horizon at 6am, when I'm either finishing or starting work. Happy days are here again!
  20. Ye these things do tend to wander off down side alleys. So... today in my neck of the woods the sun is above the horizon for exactly three minutes and eighteen seconds less than it was yesterday. Yeehaa!
