  1. Anyone in here from Princetown/Devon? If it's going to snow in Cornwall/ Devon this ,I've been told is the place to be.. Was thinking of taking a drive up there tomorrow/Sunday with the sledge and kids was wondering if it would be worth the hour drive, anyone with any info much appreciated

I'm thinking the same, EURO 4 shows a nice streamer that could give some decent snow over the Moor

Though if it does verify the higher roads could become a bit tricky..

The webcam showed a bit of snow this morning, receded to the higher hills on the moor this afternoon, though the snow level should lower again tonight/tomorrow if there are decent enough showers.

however as with showers no guarantee and a slight shift could leave the moor with not much.

  2. That is insane for January 9th, a potential record-breaker perhaps? As I type, I'm sitting in Air Temps of 14.1c which is the warmest it has been all day. Pretty darn blustery out there now even this far inland and it could be a bit of a testing Friday night rush-hour for some.

Was pretty remarkable and quite possibly as this page suggests the 1964-2007 record for Yeovilton was just below 15c but they reached 16.1c yesterday.

Reached 16.3c in the end here

Had a brief drizzly squall recently that dropped the temp a degree to a freezing 12.9c lol (equalling the overnight min, it had risen back to 13.9c)

Quite windy this morning, wasn't too bad yesterday here as we seem to be relatively sheltered from W/WSW winds.

  3. 15.2mm from the frontal wave yesterday morning with 3.8mm falling on Wednesday, and 1.2mm last night. A peak of 12.7c at 6am this morning before falling to 11c at 8am. Weather not that normal for winter this morning being sunny (though sometimes hazy) and mild at 12.2c now.

Forecast to reach 15c later.. which would be my highest January temp recorded to date.

Just saying the same thing on the SE thread, EPIC fail (again) by the forecasters at such short range. Far more expansive rain than forecast last night, I don't think it will be over much before lunchtime here. Sunday was another forecast blooper and the rainfall we received on Saturday was far more than forecast - Met0 really needs to get it's act together!

I guess they can only go with their best guess based on what most models or their higher resolution ones suggest before the event

  4. Crazy stuff this morning, left home around 07:45, had to scrape ice from the screen of the car, temperature was around 2C, plenty of white from overnigth frost.. Drove into Poole, temperature leapt up to 8C, clearly no frost here.

Drove home around 08:45, temperature dropped nearing home back towards 3.5C, roofs covered in frost, still lying ground frost at home.

Temperature variation across a 2mile distance ....amazing.

Similar effect here, though not quite as strong as on the 31st December (when there was a 10c difference in under a mile and 45m altitude difference). Again due to cold air staying in sheltered spots and valleys with the milder flow above.

Low of -1.3c yesterday and stayed below freezing till 7:30. Valley floor was frosty but not the hillsides at dawn, before a sudden temp rise.

As for this morning that's a lot more water on radar than I remember on the forecast, I did wonder as the GFS showed more than the BBC.

  5. Horrid ECM again. It seems there will basically be no interesting weather before I go back to uni.

As always recently the cold zonality/PM airmass charts downgrade to leave a predominance of mild TM airmasses, but with the lows too far north to provide much active weather for the south at least..

One of the most boring Christmas period's weather (speaking of my 12th Dec - 12th Jan uni holiday). Not going to lie, found last year more interesting most of the time.

Not one opportunity in this month long period to even drive up on Dartmoor and see any snow (even last year managed a dusting up there lol). At least there were a few sharp frosts recently which easily beat last winters mins.

  6. Speaking from a Devon perspective (not uni), probably too much thunder this year to be among my most forgettable years.. and the storms and exceptional wetness of January and February were certainly not forgettable.

Active lightning display in the early hours of the 7th June (missed this but compensated by seeing active storms in the Home Counties on the 13th/14th June)

warm-hot spell in July with thunderstorms around, a good June and July overall.

Strong thunderstorm a few miles away in October with flash flooding in Exeter (missed it while at uni though). Local downpour with flooding here in November (though again missed it).

Not the most memorable year either though and nothing particularly extreme on the temperature front, waited till December for decent winter night time minima.

  7. Another cold min with -4.5c at 1:55am.

Totally different on surrounding hills, A station 0.85 miles to my west and only 45m higher had a min of +1.6c, and for a while was about 10c warmer. Around 5:20 it was -3.9c here in the valley but +6.2c up there, 10.1c higher. This is due to the milder air flowing over cold air in the valley creating a strong inversion.

The temp suddenly rose around dawn as the breeze 'dislodged' the inversion, since then a cloudy day with a max of 10.0c at 12:53.

  8. Just woke up and noticed the temp differences in my previous post have increased, 30 mins ago -3.8c here, and less than a mile to my west and 45m higher it was +6.3c, a difference of 10.1c! :o

    Currently -3.1c/+6.8c

There's a steep hill just to my east which rises to over 100m where the road is (and over 212m to my SE, 247m to my NE).. must be odd walking or driving down that and seeing a temp drop of 10c..

This doesn't show the station just to my west or any close hilltop stations unfortunately, but shows some of the temp variance around this area at 5:30 with a pocket of colder air here and towards Exeter while the coast and Axe valley to the east is +7/+8c.. I'm the -4c station..

Large temp differences along other parts of the south coast too.

  9. A min of -5.9c here at 3:21 so not quite as low a the previous night that reached -6.7c.

Warmer today reaching 8.2c with as light southerly breeze came in with the coast a few miles away.

Currently it's -3.1c and this is the kind of set up where you get large local temp variations and inversions around this area, as a milder flow overrides colder air in the valleys.

Here at the bottom of the valley 10 mins ago it was -3.2c, yet a vantage vue weather station under a mile to my west and only 45m higher was reading +4.4c, so 7.6c higher. The temp there is fluctuating though, presumably near the inversion boundary, as it just quickly dropped to 3.1c.

Normally it's 2-3c warmer on clear calm nights but have occasionally seen it higher like now.

  10. This is the kind of set up where you get large local temp variations and inversions around this area, as a milder flow overrides colder air in the valleys.

Here at the bottom of the valley it's currently -3.2c, yet a vantage vue weather station under a mile to my west and only 45m higher is currently reading +4.1c. Normally it's 2-3c warmer on clear calm nights but have occasionally seen it higher like now.

  11. A min of -5.9c before a bit of cloud caused it to rise a few degrees 5am, so 0.8c warmer than the night before.

Max reached 8.2c as a light southerly breeze started so a bit warmer than expected. However it was brief so some patchy frost remained in sheltered spots with the ground still frozen.

Dropped quickly again this eve, now 0.9c.

  12. Accidentally posted this in the SE thread this morning but had a minimum of -6.7c here.

Was a bit chilly, but gloriously sunny. Max was 4.9c however some patches of frost remained all day in shaded areas.

Already below freezing here now at -0.9c.

The Met Office forecast (both local town and text) are a touch warmer for tonight. The 850's are warmer and the flow (at least above the surface) turns more westerly then southerly. Not sure how much difference that will make but could be slightly less cold especially for some of the higher ground and around southwestern coasts. Some places could get colder though, not sure. Certainly another very cold night coming up at any rate.
