It was the worst of all time from a cold perspective.........we had none!
Until last year I had never gone a winter without seeing a snowflake. I thought it impossible......surely over the course of 5 months (Nov - March) we would have at least a few hours of favourable conditions for snow even in the worst winter. Well last winter showed me how dire things could be.
I went to York in 2004 - 07. These were awful for snow in a city widely regarded for its cold winter weather.
Shame I didn't get to go later in 2010 when the Ouse was frozen solid for most of December and they had a sack full of snow.
Playing around with the clock does not alter the total amount of daylight.
Personally I find the current system fine. Unless you alter the earth on its axis you will always have 8 hrs of light in mid winter and 16hrs in high summer.
16 - 8 = 12hrs average. A fair compromise in a 24 hr day between lovers of light and darkness.
Wooooooooooooooow!
Cracking storm! Some of the best lightning I have seen in this country. Very close strikes here....lots of cloud to cloud and ground.
This was not even expected!
Just been checking out civil, nautical and astronomical twilight times. 21st July is the first day of true darkness here. Does anyone have any decent websites giving more information on this? I use timeanddate at the moment.
My house was built in 1914 and is not the best insulated. It just struggles to cool down in south London after a warm day - you guys up north are very lucky! July last year was just horrible for sleep.
The month has not seen any very warm days though - 24 / 25c etc. To me it has seemed fairly average, we have just had no cold spell to offset the mild temps and result in a lower average.
Yes Tim - I skied borovets last year this very week and it was very good. This year it looks awful! Enjoyed Bulgaria but it does not compare to the Alps..... even with lots of snow the piste preparation is a little lacking.
