    Yes they did spring out of nothing here on the 7th Jan 1978 nothing to report A nudge from the Azores on the 12th and its get your sledge out time. Sometimes I think we know too much now.

    Difficult to say really at this stage but at 126z on the GFS which is pants compared to UKMO the wind is e/ne and coming from a scandi direction All hypothetic at this stage. Hoping for GFS to sustain the high further north over us.

    I was trying to explain the reasoning behind some "worries" people have about breakdowns in general. There is no breakdown as there is not yet a cold spell long live the cold spell I say

    If you look at this basic illustration by the ECM 00Z it shows a developing Easterly flow followed by an attempt by the Atlantic to displace the cold. I know this will probably change on the 12z and may not be the correct way forward. The latter frames to me look like the energy is moving s/e from the encroaching Atlantic and heights are desperately trying to reform to our n/e and n/w so this is why Exeter feel that they have to mention it. These situations can and have provided large snowfall totals in the past. Indeed the re establishing of the block has provided this country with many a classic winter as a battle ground over our cold land mass can occur.

    We had had -8 uppers down to the south coast preceding the "slider". That is not on the agenda at all so far for next week.Scottish mountains etc will always see some action.

    ECM = Cold rain next week GFS = Cold rain with back edge sleet at elevation No cold pool in place so any runner that MAY happen is running into milder uppers Further than that is up for interesting debate until the lack of data gets rolled out
