  1. This evening a disappointment. snowed a little at 6pm then warmed up again. Snowing a bit now but nothing settling 0.6 degrees. I snow is difficult to forecast but was expecting a covering this evening. Let's see what tomorrow brings!
  2. Wierdly warmed up to 2 degrees in Hexham and rained for a while now back at 1.3 degrees and sleet. Not sure whats going on. Missing a lot of potential snow here.
  3. I don't think it really means snow showers it means a mix of snow and rain, or snow that has almost melted when it reaches the ground and would not settle or accumulate.
  4. Looking forward to seeing all our snow from Sunday onwards. Hexham is funny for snow - sometimes we are "protected" (in a bad way) by hills north and south but if the wind direction is E or ENE the showers just run up the Tyne Valley and we get it. Looking forward to it.
  5. Think about this..... Just because a forecast or model turns out to be wrong it doesn't make it a bad forecast as all we can ask a forecast/model to do is to tell us the most likely outcome for the future weather at the time it was made. After that (remembering that weather systems are chaotic) what actually happens, which is not determined at the time the forecast is made, may not be the most likely outcome at the time of the forecast, so in fact the best model/forecast may get it wrong and the worst one may get it right.
  6. So in Hexham (up the hill a bit 140m) we ended up with 3-4 cm of snow probably less in the town centre.. Only 1 degree now but a bit of drizzle.
  7. Hexham not really on a hill. I think anywhere in Northumberland away from the coast has had a more snowy/icy winter than average recent years this year. Shows how different the weather can be over a short distance.
  8. This has probably been the best winter here in terms of times it has snowed and days of snow on the ground and icy frosts for 4 or 5 years. And we are not half way through winter yet and it's snowing now - what are you expecting to happen in a British winter?
  9. Phil & Fairweather: Got so bogged down in the cold watching one year that when I looked out of the window there was snow and I hadn't noticed. Surely snow tomorrow is worth 2 at the weekend?....
  10. I think 10cm for us tomorrow during the day then during sleety later on and turning to wet slush thursday. Weekend and beyond looks interesting too though. Let's all post pictures if we get white stuff. Sorry "coasters" it must be frustrating.
  11. Hi frozen north people, So what are we going to get. Snowy day tomorrow and thaw Weds on? Or will the cold hang on a bit? Should be fun anyway. On the BBC issue it is now a joke. Is all they are allowed to do read the script when if any of them bother to look at the forecast models like many weather watchers they would know that what they are saying is not the most likely outcome. Met office doing much better so just watching their forecasts now. I realise the south is going to be warm while we get some snow but they have so downplayed the snow for many this week, especially Scotland and the chance of a very cold weekend and week next week. If they are worried about saying the wrong thing then just stick to today/tomorrow forecast.
  12. This winter here has been the best (snowiest) we have had for several years. We had snow lying from Christmas Eve until a few days ago except a couple of days. Most places in Britain don't get much snow except the odd winter every 10 or 20 years - not sure what you are expecting? Snow tonight too?
  13. Had about 6-7 cm last Thursday morning. Seems to come on a Thursday to make it difficult for our "bin-men" - we are on quite a steep hill. I agree Adrian - probably same places as last week, but there was some in the town at Hexham last week not just the hills. John
  14. I know I'm basically "nowcasting" but this looks quite interesting for Hexham? We could get a bit or a lot overnight? Especially with a little height (140m for me). What do others think? Temperature falling fast down to 2.4 degrees in the garden at 4.30pm
