  1. February 2005, significant snow on over 10 days, 6 inches at one point. Duration of the cold spell was memorable though, not the severity. June 19th 2005 had one of the best storms I've ever seen in the Northeast though in terms of cg lightning, and 31st August 2005 had a supercell - the only one I can recall for Newcastle.
  2. Ground frost: 9th October Snowfall: 25th November* Air frost: 8th November *Significant snow probably 7th January but I shouldn't really be starting a new category
  3. While we're on the subject, where do people think the best place in Belgium will be for storms on Friday? I don't have much choice though - I arrive in the North of the country first thing, stopping off near Brussels for a few hours at Lunch, and arrive in the South mid-late afternoon. Partly I want to know because if storms are very likely by early afternoon in the South I might not bother stopping so I can both arrive safely and witness a storm I might make an on the spot decision to travel 10 - 20 miles in the evening if there is anything spectacular on the horizon.
  4. I'd say June was what it should be like - not much hot weather, but plenty of fine weather and high pressure close by. Sure there was some bad days aswell, but that is to be expected. July on the other hand has be rotten - I had a week in the Lake District and it poured every day but 1. Even for the Lakes that is worse than what you should expect in summer. If August is a good one I would pass this summer as slightly better than average at best, or slightly below average at worst.
  5. It might be me being thick but on the latest GFS run does that thundery low over France, Belgium and later Holland just fizzle out after Friday/Saturday? If it does I'd say it's a good sigh for the UK at least since this low could push north into the north sea, dragging in a very cool north/northeasterly wind and heavy rain if it doesn't disappear. I'm going to Belgium though on Thursday so it doesn't matter too much to me, though a northerly may affect the weather there too if it was potent.
  6. Don't worry, I'm using the Hull - Zeebrugge ferry next Thursday night so there's bound to be plenty of storms to disrupt my journey! Just off the coast of East Anglia would be a good bet, and GFS suggests this too
  7. Yes, ECM FI very nice indeed :o Pity it's FI, though at +168 the improvement is underway. I reckon a decent August COULD be on the cards, but that is purely guesswork. More likely is that the last few days of July/First week of ugust will be good. Funny how the best weather comes at the end/start of each month this year
  8. Bit off topic but I've been there before! Presuming you mean the Haven one From memory the weather is always cold, grey and windy
  9. I actually agree with you there Very wet weather tomorrow in the NE means that any more heavy rain in the near future would cause flooding Confidence appears to be low however, so with SLIGHT rises in pressure expected to the south we could well end up with a slacker low pressure influence than predicted and therefore more warmth. A high pressure influence is almost impossible in the next week though so there would bound to be showers and thunderstorms so by no means great summer weather.
  10. Why do you doubt this? I think this looks similar to the 6th September last year (the day Morpeth was flooded - 109mm fell here and only 50-60mm was forecast if I remember correctly)
  11. Yes it does seem unlikely that we'd get a heatwave - what I posted did sound like I meant that What I was trying to get across was that at the time of posting (though not now) the models were trying to bring a hot southerly into France. I thought that later in the week this could possibly influence the UK since the unsettled weather in FI is too far ahead to guarantee. Looking at the models today though it doesn't look very good, though I notice high pressure building to our south - could it save August?
  12. I agree some bad looking charts, but I have noticed the models trending towards a warm southerly and high pressure by next week. I know it is quite a long way off, but it is a possibility which is repeatedly being suggested. Before then though it looks to me like moderate rain will be predominant rather than heavy rain at the end of the week (bar some possible storms in the southeast on Friday), and temperatures will most likely be 12-15C in Scotland and 17 or 18C elsewhere, with the odd 20C in the southeast.
  13. I know the feeling - I'm going to Cumbria next week so there's bound to be some good storms this week
  14. This month has been exceptional for the Northeast so far, 2 storms which I would call severe! (1st + 6th), and weak ones on the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th. On top of that, this week looks like it could hold some more.
  15. Although none of the models are showing this, I've got a gut feeling that we are in for a heatwave during late July / early August. The models are sometimes over progressive in FI, and there looks to be the possibility of a similar pattern to late July 2008? Looking at what is there though, I'm certainly hoping for a storm or two in what has already became a very thundery July here
  16. I was indoors during the storm, but I was by a window facing the centre of it. Every 10-15 seconds there was a lovely bolt of lightning, and I nearly dashed out to build an ark!
  17. All got powercuts Thunderstorm probably just south of Newcastle has been there for about 1 and a half hours now, I wish it would hurry up it is nearly here!
  18. Loud thunder just heard, 3 cells now visible around 1 mile to my south, all joined together to make a row.
  19. Really? The last storm was the most spectacular one I've seen since Paris last August! Maybe it was more intense away from the coast, the local school had 1 inch of water on the concrete play ground
  20. As the gust front passed over here the wind picked up for a few minutes, and the loudest boom of thunder occurred.
  21. It was like that here too, but by the time I found my camera it had subsided and I was sitting in the middle of it Glad someone else managed to capture it! That's funny, I've had 4 storms in the past 5 days and if you count Wednesday as 4 seperate ones its 7! Yesterday there was only 1 rumble though.
  22. Yup, it was quite impressive, I saw a cg bolt and some hail fell from it
  23. Up here in the northeast 'jobbies' can mean...never mind - look it up if you don't know. I won't post it here, I'm not that unsocial
  24. Just seen a lovely little cg to my northeast, and a couple of cc's. 13 rumbles in total I've heard
