  1. Oh god yes I am most definitely looking forward to spring! Primarily for the longer daylight hours. Pig sick of it getting dark before I leave work - gives me headaches and makes for some very unsafe feeling journeys home. Some warmth too would be most welcomed - in the form of strong sunshine but clean fresh air. Usually I like to see a mixture of northerlies and southerlies in spring to give a good mix of cold air/warm sun/convective showers (towering clouds included! One min its sunny, next it's bucketing it down) coupled with much warmer periods giving a taste of the coming summer... What I don't want in spring is dull easterlies that just feel cold (from cold sea) and bring little but low cloud. Don't mind some Atlantic storms although I prefer those earlier in the season rather than later. For me, life improves immensely once those clocks move. BST is the time to live, GMT the time to hibernate! Totally agree! By mid March sunrise is around 6am yet sunset is still around 6pm which from an energy efficiency point of view isn't sensible (since more people are awake doing things at 6pm vs 6am). I only feel 'spring like' once sunset hits around 7pm suddenly giving a sense of getting home from work and it not yet dark...
  2. A cold, grey and windy start which was extremely unpleasant to cycle in this morning. Gradually it's got less cold and we even saw some sunshine earlier. This evening there's a keen north wind on which has finally shifted the omnipresent low cloud so I could see the Moon and stars for first time in many weeks. I really hate the winter default of dark with low cloud & cold air - seems to go on forever!
  3. Feel much colder tonight although still dull and miserable. Temp around 2c. Roll on northerly later in the week - a lot less cloud around!
  4. Usual stuff - 3c and cloudy with odd bit of drizzle. Sick of the lack of sunlight now. I've felt half ill/fed up for ages now and I'm sure it's down to the lack of light. I was fine during the sunny snow showers in first week but we've had next to no sun since then. I really hate the winter default - low cloud temp 2-5c with bits of drizzle. It's boring, depressing and unpleasant. Roll on April!
  5. Yes top priority for me is sunshine levels. Hence why I'm rarely keen on low cloud laden easterlies - the exception being when they are extremely cold like at the beginning of the month and thus are sunny with snow showers. Unfortunately our winter default does seem to be temps 3-6c with cloud hence why I find it hard to be as excited about the season as others are. Certainly this winter has been more interesting but we've now had almost 3 weeks of cold cloudy weather and it's really beginning to grate now. It is actually sunny this morning (like it was yesterday morning) which I put down to me trying to have a lie in - not easy with low sun streaming in and my budgies screaming as they get a rare bit of decent light!
  6. True it does look fairly uninteresting... but still I'd rather have dull with temps 8-10c rather than dull with temps 2-4c. So from my point of view it would be an improvement on the recent weather albeit still nothing exciting nor special.
  7. But surely they'll provide much more 'weather' than the recent unending low cloud coupled with a chilly east to south easterly wind. I've seen only a couple of hours of sunshine in almost two weeks now and it's getting very boring & depressing now. At least stuff from the west is more dynamic!
  8. A mostly cold & grey day with some light drizzle. A strong cold east wind developing later in the day which was just lovely to cycle uphill against. 3c at the mo.
  9. Mixture of sunshine and cloudy spells and feeling mild at around 7-8c. Cycled home with neither gloves nor hat - felt like I'd emerged from a cocoon of clothing after the last few weeks. Instead the other problem of overheating in the big coat has appeared. You need it when setting off as it isn't that mild but after 10-15 mins you're too hot - the usual state of affairs for winter returns! Still almost a month on from the shortest day now - another few weeks and we get daylight for the journey home...
  10. First 'nice' day in well over a week. Plenty of sunshine (first sun in 8 days) and finally not feeling cold. Was lovely to take a stroll around in lighter jacket with no need for hat & gloves. Temp max around 8c.
  11. Been raining for many hours now - back to normal weather! Still it's nice that the house isn't quite so cold with that bone chilling cold now behind us. Temps around 5c which is mildest in many weeks now.
  12. Well having had the recent cold spell I'm up for some normal British winter weather - mild SWlys and rain. At least for a couple of weeks as I'm sick of the lethal ice & cold conditions that invade everything. Into Feb a return to cold conditions would be good - so long as it's of the sunny cold not low cloud cold (like this week). So northerlies are reliable for this - or very cold easterlies (i.e. first week of Jan type). Then I'd like the first hint of spring as the sun gains strength - those magical odd days Feb sometimes provides with temps into the mid teens. Into March a mixture of cold northerlies (sunny) along with high pressure giving pleasant warm days and freezing nights. We need rain at some point and I'd much rather see Atlantic storms during Jan-March/April than April/May-August when it can be high pressure & dry/hot non stop for me.
  13. Consistently cold with temps struggling to make it to freezing over several weeks - something I've not experienced in many many years. Plenty of 'Arctic' sunshine which was fantastic over the snow as it really really boosted light levels right at the time of year you most need it. Felt positive during the first week back at work which I'm sure was down the decent light levels (and the excitement of snow!). Unfortunately last week changed all that - not seen any sunshine at all since last Saturday now so no surprise I've been much less positive this week. Snowfall wise it hasn't been anything too special - all the big falls missed this area and we got a max of only a few cm. Feb 09 was much better for snowfall here (in terms of depth) but with the length of the cold spell this time everything did hang around longer. Ice has been horrendous at times and having injured myself once over xmas on black ice I've been extra careful since. Has doubled my journey to/from work and at times made it quite scary. I won't miss that part of the cold spell! All in all, memorable but I'm glad it has ended now. Just need some normality!
  14. Yeah snowing a bit more now here too (next to university boulevard). Take a long time to properly settle at this rate tho! Settling on the black ice at least so it'll be easier to spot.
  15. Horrendous black ice out there - can't cycle for 90% of my route to work. Be extremely careful and take things slow if you need to be out there. This winter/cold spell is really outliving its welcome for me now. Dull, drizzly, sunless & lethal ice isn't what I call fun. Roll on spring.
  16. I'm in The Park - 5 mins walk from city centre. Snowing again now after some light rain! Gotta love how it suddenly turned mild when it was finally our turn to get hit! grr
  17. Crikey what happened?! Went to bed last night with warnings and info that the midlands was going to get pasted with snow (which would be a first for this winter - at least round here anyway) and wake up to rain and all warnings gone! Disappointing definitely as it was the first time Notts was coloured orange on the warning maps and the first time we were in the firing line for the 'worst' of it (instead of just getting left over showers). Well if it must warm up then I hope it warms up properly - there's nothing worse in winter than temps 1-4c with chilly easterly winds laden with cloud & drizzle.
  18. It's a sleety mix here at the moment. Looks like it's now too warm to fall as snow except during heavier precip. Turning to snow though now as it does indeed get heavier.
  19. Ahh finally some decent snowfall. Was coming down good last night for almost two hours while I was in the pub (head hurts this morning!). Now a good covering and it's currently lightly snowing. Finally the Notts snow shield has fallen!
  20. Yep it's snowing out there albeit fairly light. But still it's snow and we beggars can't be choosers!
  21. That's what has happened near enough everytime! Like the big dumping Sheffield, Mansfield and Birmingham got - but all we got was a light shower as it clipped us... Keeping a close eye on this one! If we all concentrate maybe we can will it here...
  22. A whole bunch of precip coming this way - but will it make it....? Surely this time it'll hit and not fizzle- surely!
  23. About ten flakes of snow there... Almost an average snow shower here! Nothing else coming...
  24. Still nowt here - all slid to the south as per usual!
