  1. Aye, theres been steady light snow in the middle of town this last hour or two. Seems like this cold period is never-ending.

Like LS said yesterday (and JoeShmoe above), I'd be more than happy to see the March cold play out (chance of a record cold one) ... but come April I want to be done with this stuff, this winter has been too bloody long already !

  2. After a serious days walking over The Pentlands, I used to go drinking there (about 20+ years ago) in what used to be called (in fact was probably nicknamed) "Ma Browns".

If we missed the last bus we'd just stagger down the last few miles into town, tired and pshed !

Nice to see Balerno in that video - only about 5 mins from here.

  3. 12 miles downwind from sodden-wet snowless Leith to a different climate zone in the same city. Crazy...

Anyway, nae mair TOORPing from me. For those that can get out and about with the kids on an enforced day off, enjoy... theres nothing better!

Incredible scenes here this morning for March. Cleared paths filling in almost as quick as I clear them. White out at times, drifts over a foot deep... Amazing

  4. Aye thats it Catch, the oro uplift type thingy... ! Or why ski-ing happens in the mountains and not on the beach LOL...

Orographic uplift, I would explain it but you would be better typing it into Google and getting a good description of it. Or wait for LS laugh.png

Luck of the draw Stuart, other local factors must have worked in your favour. Enjoy !

I dont understand i am only about 6m above sea and i have snow on ground here and some member dont have any snow laying

  5. Yup, I think we know about 20 ways for Embra not to get snow and 2 ways for it to get it !

But to be fair we've got 101_North on the other side of town who's done well out of it, so I guess Embra is just a microcosm of the coastal effect on one side (north and east) and the inland height effect on the other (south and west)

Yes, caused likely by the frontal nature of this event as opposed to the more common easterly convective events (such as last Sun/Mon) where Embra usually gets a lot off the sea

  6. LS always explains it better but I guess its basic meteorology. Cold moist air forced upwards over a little bit of height and the snow does fall... Nae height here of course so nothing is being "released" despite the radar screaming all the right orange-shades much of the time.

It's been odd how the precip here has been so light yet a mile inland and further in it's seems to rapidly intensify, och well

  7. Aye, its similar to one of these marginal events a few weeks back (I'm losing track of them now). There was nothing worthwhile here for By-Tor junior, but up to the in-laws at Liberton and he made a great snowman. 10 minutes in the car but inland and 400ft up. Makes a heck of a difference.

Amazing the differences across Edinburgh yet again. A few meters in height really makes so much difference.

  8. Aye we're more or less in the same boat Hawsey. Frustrating thing is the lack of precipitation intensity here on the coast. There's been no problem with snow falling here since late-afternoon yesterday. But we were done with the sporadic heavy-shower type activity by mid evening last night and since then its just been inconsequential lamp-post type intensity. Its just ugly outside, cold and raw, nowt to show for it.

Yup, definite TOORP from me !

Needless to say nothing here either, just a light rain/snow mix, +1.7c. Clearly shaping up into a decent event for those inland/at altitude but just not cold enough for coasties (as yet anyway). Met O have adjusted their forecast to include 'sleety at times on the Fife coast' which wasn't there yesterday...reflecting conditions on the ground.

  9. As anticipated, its a Leith mega-TOORP from me. Woke up to the same picture as last night. Snowflakes blowing about in the wind but with no intensity whatsoever. Streets wet, nae lying snaw at all. Radar and sky full of it but local snaw end-product here is precisely zero.

Enjoy your snow folks but its an absolute TOORP non-event here.

  10. Ach well, its not over till the fat lady etc ....

Good shout there on your forecast map anyway.

Edit: only lamp-post type snow here, streets wet, cars wet, hedges glistening with water. Residual slush patches but that's all. Not a pretty sight.

    Ici:

After this winter I understand your frustration BT, it's not simply the marginality but the fact that the heavy stuff just seems to avoid us altogether even when the radar looks like it should be immensely snowy.

  11. Ach well, its only 10 minutes drive if I want to go and look at it ! laugh.png

I'm still habouring hopes that The Braids will pick up enough to allow for some late spring sledging with the youngster this week...

No sign of degradation as such here, cover still reasonable on the grass and trees, just transient on tarmac and cars. I think we might just be able to salvage something out of it in this part of town when the front comes in since it does seem to lie quite well when there's a bit of intensity to it and some of it is just down to a lack of persistent heavy showers but Leith is looking a bit precarious at the moment.

  12. Think you may be right - locally looking worse here. Slush now really just on its last legs on the way to utter wetness. Cloud a bit higher - I can see Fife horizon no problem. Don't see it working out here as things stand. But inland/upland still looking great.

My current analysis is that the front seems to be moving into East Lothian and Edinburgh but we still have convection developing underneath that which will crucially enhance precipitation intensity. Remember though, fronts are dangerous things and have a habit of turning on you, especially if you live near the coast. Still, for those whom fortune favours this will be a night to remember for a long, long time even in a winter packed with locally outstanding events.

Yeah, I'm getting that sinking feeling here too Joe. For others, enjoy !

Aye, not going to be our night, and can't see things improving greatly tomorrow as uppers/DPs stay roughly the same but great to see those inland getting walloped

  13. Aye, I don't grudge it to anyone, hope you get your night to remember.

Not sure I could suffer another letdown so quickly though after Hearts got done over by St. Mirren yesterday... sad.png

So forgive me if I have a wee TOORP in the morning !

  14. Ach Hawsey, nae luck. LS understands the rationale better than me, but it is madly frustrating to be on a sticky-oot bit of Fife, and then see it go past and around you and dump on everyone else. Sucks to be right on the coast sometimes and this may be another one of these times...

No gloopy slush here...I should be so lucky. ;-) Out here on the margins it's the odd few flakes in the wind but damp, cold and breezy sums it up. +1.7c.

  15. Hopefully. Net degradation here this last couple of hours. Mostly gloopy slush here now so getting myself mentally ready to accept it may not pan out (well not here anyway). Just wrong side of marginal here thus far.

Looks like something more organised moving towards Edinburgh from the east. A bit frustrating to see other parts copping the snow but I suppose that's just par for the course here, plus it is March! Shaping up to be a good event, and hopefully we can stave off the marginality and allow accumulations to build up overnight and into tomorrow.

  16. Ach well long way to go SP33, but Leith isn't renowned for its snow-capturing ability. Good to see you're getting some decent activity up there. Make sure to get some piccys out in the morning !

Good evening BT. Glad to see your getting in on the action. You seem to often get dealt a s**t hand. I think there may be more happening later in the night and morning going by warnings and bbc 24 update just now with Jay Wynne (correct me if I'm wrong) Showers still rattling through here. Large flakes then dust snow combined with very gusty wind. Everything is white but no increase in depth. That could just be my greed looking for 6".
