  1. Winds have now eased considerably but the problem now is with falling temps and ice forming, drivers on A6 Shap road are becoming stranded on frozen roads say Cumbria Police! I forgot all about the cold air flooding south with all the wind action taking place! Currently 1.8c here.
  2. A few pictures I've found from local sources. A very intense day of weather!
  3. No wonder so many problems being reported locally. Storm force 10 gusting 81mph. http://www.xcweather.co.uk/ Winds continuing to moderate slowly.
  4. 76mph recorded on the Cumbrian coast. Not quite as intense now.
  5. Seems to be getting more intense, roof tiles are clattering away!
  6. Very sorry to hear of the first fatality from today's storm. hopefully the last report of such thing but it won't be for a few hours until we realise the true impact of the windstorm. Unfortunately seroius injury or worse is Inevitable during severe gale events.
  7. A few trees down around the area, the main A595 blocked near Whitehaven.
  8. Some real violent gusts coming through now, and I'm not venturing outside with my anemometer again to get sand blasted!! repeated gusts up to and around 70mph, not quite as bad as it is north of the border though.
  9. 10. Just clocked 72.3mph gust outside my front door. Insane outside atm. Reaching their peak soon over N england.
  11. Very windy now hitting close to 60mph, woke everyone up! Expecting the peak over the next few hours, horrendous rush hour coming up. Latest gusts, extremely windy over NW Scotland - http://www.xcweather.co.uk/
  12. For a bit of drama - the 18z pressure chart with isobars plotted every 1mb!
  13. Yep you can see the circulation to the NW of the main low, and on the NAE chart.
  14. Western Isles will be the first to experience severe wind gusts shortly after midnight, so things getting pretty lively up there over the next couple of hours.
  15. The centre is to the south of Iceland under the developing hammer head of cloud, perfect image there of rapid cyclogenesis under way! Roughly where the NAE has the depression around 9pm. Look at the wind field!
  16. Gusts around 40-50mph over NW scotland/Islands now, steady increase in wind speeds. http://www.xcweather.co.uk/GB/observations
  17. Worth bearing in mind that the majority of the station observations are taken hourly and may not always give the true picture. One of my favourite sites for sure in these events
  18. Expect the strongest winds to develop during the early hours, peaking around 6am to 9am before beginning to moderate quickly from the west. Nothing overly windy this side of midnight anyway.
  19. Big downgrade Pit? Top gusts have come down slightly (5mph or so) and thats just on the OP run, still many more intense options http://www.meteociel.fr/cartes_obs/gens_panel.php?modele=0&mode=1&ech=30 http://www.meteociel.fr/cartes_obs/gens_panel.php?modele=0&mode=1&ech=36 00z gust charts http://www.xcweather.co.uk/GB/forecast Lets see how the 12z runs handle the system
  20. I expect tomorrow the details will be firmed up on and the warnings normally get reviewed and updated around 11am, if necessary. Amber warnings very likely to be issued IMO for this event.
  21. Also a major weather event for much of Northern & Central UK lets not forget, somewhere could squeeze gusts knocking on for 100mph, even inland populated towns could experience gusts around 70mph - Coinciding with a busy weekday morning, school runs, the commute to work etc.
  22. This thread is for discussing the wind event and the following cold plunge from the Arctic as the depression exits into the North Sea. Chat, analysis, local reports etc as events unfold.
