  1. Usually with these events they get downgraded nearer the time! This beast has steadily been ramping up over the last couple of days.
  2. I've just merged both threads that were basically discussions on the same event, title also changed Please carry on folks
  3. Even inland over N Britain gusts of 60-70mph are looking quite likely from this event, touching 80mph or so for more exposed areas. Certainly strong enough to cause some significant problems. Tomasz Schafernaker â€@Schafernaker 45sOh myyy...Thursday is looking seriously stormy across Northern half UK. Blizzards in Scottish Hills. Mega gales, damaging too. Stay tuned!
  4. Indeed, some warnings I've read that have been issued today are mentioning 80-90mph gusts a possibility for some locations. Potentially noteworthy wind event for Thursday, expect some amber and maybe even red warnings to be issued during Wednesday.
  5. Still looking very nasty for Thursday, becoming extremely windy for a time during the morning. Having a look round XC weather wind plots for Thursday using 00z data which is highlighting the potential for gusts of 75-80mph+ over N Britain, a bigger impact to the infrastructure likely due to wind than anything wintry, for the majority anyway! isotach km/h mean speeds. Click to Thursday morning - http://www.xcweather.co.uk/GB/forecast
  6. Certainly enough confidence for the Met Office to issue early wind warnings for Thursday and also the ECM yesterday was showing mean speeds of 45-50kts (52-57mph).
  7. Could be a pretty significant wind event going by some of these postage stamps from the 12z GFS, some really intense members on offer showing damaging wind potential for much of northern and central Britain. Scope for gusts towards 80mph but we're still 3 days away, lots to keep tabs on! http://www.meteociel.fr/cartes_obs/gens_panel.php?modele=0&mode=1&ech=66 http://www.meteociel.fr/cartes_obs/gens_panel.php?modele=0&mode=1&ech=72
  8. Yes, and Ian F did mention the threat of coastal flooding. Any thoughts from the Met Office on the potential for disruptive winds, Ian?
  9. One thing that hasn't been mentioned a lot is the potential for some very stormy weather over Northern Britain on Thursday, certainly some scope for severe gales perhaps storm force winds. Expect wind warnings to be issued before we see the wintry blast dig in.
  10. I haven't read any warnings that would do justice to the exceptional situation unfolding over parts of the country at present. Bemused.
  11. Wales is taking a pounding, 70-90mph gusts!! Pretty serious, life threatening.....
  12. Currently can't see this being anywhere near as bad as what the media are raving on about given current model data available. Very windy yes, extreme, no. We have seen many similar events like this over previous years which have failed to materialise, a few days ago it was looking like a major event by Southern England standards but things have really been watered down. As ever the weather will do what it wants, taking no prisoners. This thread better not turn into a Meto bashing blood bath, like it has done in the past.
  13. Gusts topping 50mph here with mean speeds in excess of 30mph. Trees being stripped big time.
  14. 6z NAE has the most severe winds held into the Channel, you certainly wouldn't want to be out in any sea vessels come Monday morning! Wouldn't be surprised to see areas away from the South Coast/headlands escaping the worse of what this low has to offer. Still a very windy day indeed.
  15. Very windy and showery here today with some hail thrown in at times. Wind gusts around 50mph.
  16. Surprisingly very warm here today with a current air temp of 25.3c, very muggy as well. Hoping for some action later on tonight as this system edges north....
  17. Lovely dawn but another very cold start with a minimum temp of -3.6c around 6.30am. Brrrr....
  18. Winter really is not giving up! Another covering of snow this morning with an overnight low of -2.7c.
  19. Exceptionally cold feel this morning with severe windchill. The wind is very gusty, seems to have intensified overnight.
  20. I had to leave my car in a layby that had been cleared. That road where I took the video was totally blocked! My face was burning and bright red I couldn't stand it for very long even though I was in full winter gear. The walk back to the car into the wind was very harsh! Gusts were around 40-50mph.
  21. Video I took of the conditions around Keswick and Threlkeld this afternoon. Pretty severe to say the least!! The most extreme winter conditions seen for many many years, 23rd March Pfffftt
  22. 15 miles+ south of my location there has been cars stuck on A roads in 2-3 foot drifts with JCB's trying to dig vehicles out, even close to the coast down to sea level.
  23. Despite all the snowfall and serious problems around the county today my little part of Cumbria has escaped the snowfall, just bits and pieces of light snow every now and then. The ground is just wet and it looks like it's been raining, some huge differences in local ground conditions here, even 2 to 3 miles things can be very different.
  24. Sellafield is performing an emergency shut down due to the severity of the weather!! http://www.cumbriacrack.com/2013/03/22/sellafield-in-emergency-shut-down/
