  1. Anyone got any thoughts on the potential thundery spells, cape values shown on the charts for the region?
  2. Lashing, and I mean LASHING down with sleet here right now
  3. Mostly overcast here now, not sure if we have hail or frozen rain, definitely ice hitting the windows
  4. Snowing here, no breeze at all, albeit fairly light there are some big flakes mixed in, sticking instantly to all surfaces
  5. Stopped now as the band has now passed over, but left a cover albeit thin, but readily settled whilst it lasted If this is happening at sea level, with already wet ground and not particularly cold then it can happen anywhere in the region
  6. If Blackpool sea front is getting snow then i'm sure the rest of the north west should be snow too
  7. Heavy wet snow in Blackpool First snowfall at last
  8. It was really powder kind of snow that wouldn't compact to build like snowmen, or make snow ball, but the next day seemed to be softer and abled us to do that
  9. Hi Damian Yes I do remember this spell very well although I was only 14 at the time. following on from a very cold December 1995, I was in Gran Canaria for 2 weeks beginning of Jan 96 and remember when I got home a few days later think it was a Saturday in mid Jan 96 I woke up to snow cover with snow falling and gusty winds blowing snow about, looked like a blizzard, don't think that lasted long maybe a day if that. Anyway that started my interest in snow and remember looking at the Blackpool gazette one Saturday in late Jan because it had the weather for the week ahead and it mentioned snow for the Monday I think which would be around the 6th Feb? and it said snow, well that's when it got interesting because, I thought ok, nice 1, snow next week, little did I know how long it would snow for and how deep it would be, it was ridiculous, school was shut and honestly there was no cars on the road, everyone was on foot, just wondering if GFS etc was around then, how would have the models have handled it??
  10. Drizzle here, hardly surprising, the ppn is that light its called evaporative warming
  11. Ha, yeah resembles something similar, they must have flown off now, it's stopped
  12. Very fine snow, like midges round the lamp post
  13. yes someone asked earlier what the weather was like in the Blackpool/ Preston area under the blobs with the heavier echoes on radar, there was nothing, then light sleet/hail, I've read a few reports that people should be receiving ppn looking at the radar, and they had nothing.
  14. Something seriously not right if that's the case
  15. sleety now but pretty light, nothing heavy at the moment
  16. Just a bit of light hail about half hour ago, really dark skies but no precip falling
  17. Saw that too but no thunder, got hail now
  18. No precipitation at all just a flash then almost instant thunder, now raining slightly
  19. I watched a regional weather forecast at tea time, they were focusing on Saturday mentioning 70mph gales, found it most strange they had such confidence in the forecast at that range?
  20. What are the upper air temps looking like mate? surely that's ok for snow? are you at altitude?
  21. -10 850's from a polar maritime, am I correct in reading this? must have been some low SST's because normally the polar air is modified as it crosses the water
