Times square is now getting busy again, as people and cars return ramping back up to normal very quickly, the snow is just a light flakes or two now. Meanwhile in Cambridge (Boston) the Mass Trans keeps going, but things looking a little more difficult than earlier..

First real wintry weather of the season for our friends in Northern Indiana yesterday. Has continued today too I believe and got colder. Edit. Currently -8C heavy snow with drifting.

The remarkable cold goes on across NA.

right down to the gulf coast and into Mexico.

is it remarkable though? this happens most years in NA ..the remarkable thing is it has coincided with strong La Nina which favours the opposite pattern

I’d have to agree. In fact this time last year saw record lows in places like Texas and Oklahoma with I think Dallas reaching minus 20oC (near hundred year low) and even Houston dropped to around minus 10oC. (30 year low)

I agree this has occurred before but seeing freezing temps so far south is still eye catching to me.

From minus 32oC to well above freezing today. Looks like some warmer weather on its way. @CatchMyDrift maybe low teens for Calgary within the next week.

I think, with climate change, we can forget about historical synoptics.

A rampant NE Canadian PV is now the norm no matter background teleconnections.

Have to agree it is becoming the norm and the sooner it is recognised that way the sooner people will stop posting 240hr and 360 synoptics as they really are not keeping pace with the change that's going on. The models are unable to be accurate, as they have been unable to factor in the changes going on globally (mind you it would be difficult)

Do those Truck drivers REALLY think that they own the road, and sod everyone else, wandering lanes, spreading snow, they are seriously in the "Don't give a CR@P" world, when it comes to freeway driving..?

I think it's more the PV positions itself across a major landmass, hence why year after year the insane cold hits Canada and on occasions as is the case feed right down to Florida. Going forward it does make you think this is the NEW Norm...

Sunny and mild here as well, we don't have the downsloping additional warmth like Alberta, but around 4 C in sunshine is quite mild at this elevation (1050m) and the snow is slowly settling, more evaporation than melting I think but hills in town have a bit of water running down the streets. Our snow pack in town has never reached the normal value here (which is 1.5 metres), the heaviest we had was about 45 cm and now it's closer to 35 cm. Most of this snow fell in December, we had a very placid January here but snow depth stayed constant due to the coldish temperatures.

Feels a bit like spring today but a bit higher up I imagine the conditions are prime for ski-ing, probably around -2 to +1 C on the slopes.
