Solar activity remains at moderate levels. Active regions 11861 and 11865 have produced about 17 C-class solar flares over the last 2 days.

Several high C class flares over the last 48hrs, Also at least 1 possibly 2 M class flares from sunspot 1865 a few hour ago, limited data atm due to SDO reversal.

Solar Activity continues to grow and continues look like the start of the predicted 2nd Peak in Solar Cycle 24, with lot's of C class flares & minor M flares one of which was only a few hours ago from sunspot 1861 producing an M1.2 flare off the West limb, so any CME from this should escape Earth.

 

We could be about to see some big flares over the coming days, with an extremely active region of spot's coming over the Eastern limb

The official sunspot number count for October 22nd is 228. This is now a new record for Solar Cycle 24. The previous best was 208 on November 9, 2011. Although we have seen periods of much higher solar activity during this cycle, sprawling sunspot 1875 is helping the numbers out.

Almost an X-flare! AR11877 (south of AR11875) has released multiple M flares including an M9.3 flare, which is Earth facing..

Yes it's looking like both X Flares were from region 1882 !  And more to come with many active regions facing earth. The second peak of Solar Cycle 24 is now well and truly upon us...

Today marks a space weather anniversary. The strongest detected solar flare in recorded history was observed ten years ago. The X28+ mega flare took place around historical sunspot 486. Because the sunspot was facing away from Earth, the impact on our planet was minimal. Attached is a short video that was put together two years ago detailing the explosion.  Credit- Solarham.
