Lol, I wouldn't mind knowing what the solar activity was like in Dec 2010, SC was at a similar point. Need to look that up!

CHANCE OF FLARES TODAY: Sunspot AR2907 is directly facing Earth and it is poised to erupt. There is a 20% chance of M-class solar flares today and an almost 100% chance of lesser C-class flares. Minor short-wave radio blackouts and geo-effective CMEs are possible on Dec. 20-21. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text.

SURPRISE GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Arctic sky watchers were surprised on Dec. 19th when a G1-class geomagnetic storm broke the official forecast. "Little did we know, we would get a great display of auroras," says Markus Varik, who sends this picture from Tromsø, Norway:

I think this is about as active as the sun has been in this solar cycle...

Rather disappointingly seems to be gaining strength...

AURORAS SPRINKLED WITH DIAMOND DUST: "Last night I went out to photograph the auroras, and I came back with something extra" says Markus Varik of Tromsø, Norway. The auroras were sprinkled with diamond dust:

The 2000z reading last night was 136.6 = highest since mid June 2015.

This cycle properly ramping up now.

I was hoping the recent ramp up was a blip, but perhaps not?!

It is almost certainly not.

We are well into the upswing of Cycle 25 now - we will get spells of activity like the one at the moment, or considerably higher, over the next few years. Long spells with solar flux in the 70s are now unlikely, as is more than the odd spotless day.

Anticipate dips perhaps  as low as 80 or so, and peaks challenging the 150 mark.

Once the final December figures are in, I will post a summary of where we are in the new solar cycle.. but broadly, we are still tracking a little ahead of the last one at the same age (just about 2 years in)

I just hope this current spell of activity drops back soon!
