    tks for that,

fits neatly with the reports I've seen, A628 described as treacherous and the 616 feeds into that. Nice part of the world though, summer will arrive eventually, take heart!

Awesome wintry scenes there! I would happily wake up to a covering of snow at any time of the year! There was just a bit of sleet in Manchester overnight.

First person I've seen use a mobile phone to show depth. I like it, new fad coming on?

I saw some good pics of snow on another forum from the 15th in Lanarkshire

Nice pics there, and pretty decent snow for this time of year, though you have to be up at the crack of dawn to see it, which is always a pain in the ass! I always love the drive through Langsett and over to Holmfirth, its one of my faves, especially when its snowy :D PS I'd stick my nokia in the snow, but just started an 18 month contract, so probably best keeping it dry for the mo...but if it snows in May, I promise to take the plunge!! hehe :D

the original attempt to explain appears not to have downloaded for most so here is another just text attempt to help.

yep, some kind of glitch, sadly once it seemed ok on the forum I deleted my copy!

largely due to a zero isotherm of about 800-1000ft being lowered by the intensity of the ppn, and a showery airmass, although with fairly limited instability.

As the air was forced to rise west of Sheffield by the Peak District, these areas got snow earlier than those over/east of the city at the same height.

Once the air is cooled it tends to flow out and downwards thus the city and areas east of the city centre got snow later in the night.

    hope that helps this time?

Nice pictures Dr Rains. we had a similar fall to you last Saturday but at probably half the elevation to you.

Snow in April is more common than in December down here - all part of spring. We had 4 inches on April 16th one year (1999 I think, no records to hand).

Anyway, plenty to photograph and we were spoiled by temps of 18°C just the other week.

Thanks for all the comments, Don't get me wrong I'm not a winter grouch and i do still get excited at a few flakes of snow but I'm really looking forward to some more pleasant weather now - I suppose that those of us who live at such elevations should be grateful to still see the white stuff as some places hardly see any these days.
