August 25, 2011 – NEW YORK – For 30 years geologists have been puzzled by a remarkably straight magnetic line that runs between New York and Alabama along the Appalachians. A more recent aerial magnetic survey of the Alabama end of the line suggests that it’s probably a 500-million-year-old San Andreas-style fault that appears to have slipped 137 miles (220 kilometers) to the right in the distant past. If so, it’s no surprise that the most dangerous part of the eastern Tennessee seismic zone is right next to part of this magnetic line and has the second-highest earthquake frequency in the eastern United States.

interesting and worth reading.

^^^^^^

How unusual against a background of a couple of decades is that number of earthquakes of those mostly minor magnitudes in that timespan in California?

hi cp

good question but cannot be answered accurately

http://georgewashington2.blogspot.com/2010/04/no-there-are-not-more-earthquakes-than.html

1) A partial explanation may lie in the fact that in the last twenty years, we have definitely had an increase in the number of earthquakes we have been able to locate each year. This is because of the tremendous increase in the number of seismograph stations in the world and the many improvements in global communications.

all we can report on is the here and now

Virginia Earthquake 1897: Largest In Over 100 Years

http://www.postchronicle.com/news/breakingnews/Virginia_Earthquake_1897_Largest_In_Over_100_Years_20110823.shtml?rssfeed

so if you took the history over 20 years where does this earthquake stand?

Have to say I find this thread fasinating but concerning at the same time. I've just been looking at the history of earthquakes and im amazed at how many devastating earthquakes we have seen recently, Haiti 2010, Chile 2010, Japan 2011 and of course this isn't including the devastating earthquake in Indonesia plus others.

I won't go into why im concerned because this would be wildly off topic. However I don't believe its anything to do with Comet Elenin but I do fear this is only going to get worse. Let me just say that in my opinion the world is going through great tribulations!

If we have a greater capability for detecting them that's good for scientific purposes, but makes claims of "we're having more earthquakes now than we were 40 years ago" is difficult to substiantate. Sure, we're measuring more now, like we're seeing more sunspots. It doesn't mean that the earthquakes/sunspots are more numerous than before we could measure them in this detail, just that we can see more of them because of increases in technological capability.

Given how near Virgiinia is to the Appalacians, tectonic acticity is hardly unexpected, despite what the BBC are hyping.

Plus, a lot of the posts in this thread recently about a variety of quakes have been about ones that people living above the epicentre would hardly have felt and appear to making a drama out of a molehill.

As for the Virginia quake, who can tell until the scientists have spent months poring over the data? The area seems prone to long periods of no activity punctuated by short periods of activity. Given how near the Appalacians are, there must be a residual amount of seismic activity in the area relating to their formation.

However, there is as yet no statistical evidence for a general increase in geological activity/landslides, mudslides, etc.

hi cp

you make good points

but this is the earthquake thread so posting on here about earthquakes is what this thread is for.

i am not quite sure where you are getting the we are having more quakes than 40 years ago from,

I have not posted that and i have not seen that from anyone else.

As for your remark whether people would have felt the earthquake is pointless.

If there was an earthquake and it is reported, then putting the report on a thread that says

Earthquake activity thread is not wrong unless all you want posted is damaging quakes.

No one else has made these comments and i am sure if anything was wrong here the mods are

the ones who would deal with this.

this is my last comment on this and i apologise for straying off topic to the mods

Czech Earthquake swarm 2011 Last update: 26.8.2011, 14:15 CEST

The activity started in the evening of 23 August and is almost continuous till now (26 August morning). Almost 10 000 events were recorded in total up to now. Already eight events M>3.0 and 200 M>2.0 occurred.

The location of hypocenters directly below the NKC station, so it appears a new patch of the fault plane is being activated - see the joint plot pf all activity in NK area - the recent events are indicated in dark red http://www.ig.cas.cz...n-west-bohemia/

The Caulle Volcano in the Puyehue mountain range in the Ranco Province of the Los Ríos Region erupted early this morning. Media outlets weren’t immediately alarmed and there have been no reports of evacuations or flight delays due to the ash plumes. The alert level remains at red for minor eruptions, according to the Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería de Chile (SERNAGEOMIN). Four low intensity eruptions have been recorded, with three-kilometer high plumes of ash. According to SERNAGEOMIN, “the seismic activity reveals that the eruptive activity of the Caulle range continues with low intensity, with little particle emissions and apparent obstructions that are generating incrementally and with purpose to the tower of ash. The possibilities of an explosive event still remain, however it is unlikely that it will reach the magnitude of the first eruptive phase.†Puyehue, a volcano near Caulle, erupted earlier this year in June, causing evacuations of surrounding areas and many domestic and international flight delays in Chile and Argentina. Clouds of ash reaching Australia and New Zealand also caused flight delays. The volcano hadn’t been active before June since 1960, when an earthquake sparked six-mile high clouds of ash
