It's now been raining heavily here for 36 hours.

The city is in chaos - flooding everywhere. Roads closed, houses flooded, buses diverted. Marvellous.

What a lovely summery spell :)

Situation just keeps getting worse now. The East Coast Mainline through Edinburgh is now shut due to flooding. Headline in the local rag:

Nope - the only warnings are for the west. Surprising might be an understatement! Imagine if the mainline out of Waterloo was closed due to flooding... News24 cameras would be there boring us tears.

There's bound to be some MetO techie saying that "technically the trains should be able to run — despite the 2ft of flood water" or "technically, the rain isn't out of the ordinary, just there's a lot of it" :)

If it's any consolation, we had an amber warning in place last night, and got not one drop of rain.

So we've got the main city bypass A720 closed. At least five main roads in the city closed. Houses, shops etc. flooded literally 10 minutes walk from where I am sitting at work. The mailine railway between Haymarket and Waverley is closed due to flooding in Princes Street Gardens.

And the met office says:

Heavy Rain Sat 9 Aug

There is a moderate risk of a severe weather event affecting west Wales, parts of northwest England and southwest Scotland. Rain will be heavy and persistent at times giving the potential for up to 25mm in places, although locally 50mm could occur over high ground. Rain will clear from the west later in the day.

In other words we are to worry about what might happen on Saturday, but everything is fine today...

So what exactly are Weather Warnings/Flashes for?!

How come its been raining in scotland for nearly 40 hours yet there are no warnings. Also the BBC don't even mention the floods up in Scotland. If this was happening in London then it would be all around the UK on the news with weather warnings and the lot.

God dam news!!!

:) They're under instructions from the govmint to ignore Scotland after their Glasgow East humiliation?

We just had another amber warning from MetO — after the event. There was a 30 minute thunderstorm but bright sunshine now.

Yes that clearly deserves a warning! - bit of spray on the motorway and the meto issue that.

But if your house is flooding in Edinburgh and the trains are completely knackered affecting services across the whole of the UK cos of flooding - there's no need to bother.

Its seems to be typical Southern bias, if 40 hours of rain happened in the South every single site would have warnings now but as its further North nobody seems to care.

No watch/warning on net weather nor the met office, Metcheck has got a warning but not about the rain in Scotland. It drives you mad when a bit of snow in London, its headline news. Now it looks to be the same with flooding now. However why should we not be too surprised though.

Strange apart from yesterday NetWeather Radar hasn't been showing anything drastic over Scotland perhaps that's ignoring it as well or I've just looked at the wrong time. Ach lets turn on accumulative rainfall that's better. However SE areas have got more well SE East Anglia anyway. If you want something really soggy look at Northern France.

This sounds awfully bad and i think coverage of the warnings in particular has been bad. Its a bit like last year with the floods. The BBC seemed to take more interest in the Worcestershire, West Midlands and Gloucestershire floods more than the Yorkshire floods overall i think.

This Story sort of rings a bell. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgo...est/7540170.stm

A certain dam in South Yorkshire last year which wasn't being properly maintained and probably still isn't.

I heard the weather warnings for Strathclyde (inc. Glasgow area) on the Radio this morning at 8am. It did rain here in Glasgow today, but only about 15mm since 8am. But the weather warning seemed a bit extreme for what we actually got. It seems that Edinburgh got it instead.

Sorry to hear that the East of the Country is getting it bad.

Maybe the Met Office should use a "weather stone". If it's wet, its raining, white - it's snowing, dry - it's probably cloudy, bright - it's sunny, or if you can't see it - it's foggy.

i live a little further up than shuggee, it started raining here on tuesday about 5 pm, it stopped about half an hour ago. Ok it was not really heavy the whole time but was during both nights. We have been really lucky no flooding to talk of, but my plants and flowers are a mess. feel for those with flooded homes.

A certain dam in South Yorkshire last year which wasn't being properly maintained and probably still isn't.

It's the top story on the Scots news Pit - they've been worried about this dam since the start of the week - very reminiscent of Ulley as you say.

Most Intercity trains leaving Edinburgh 100+mins late this afternoon, and footage on the tv of the southern and northern tunnels at Haymarket in Princes Street Gardens under a foot of water. The city bypass has reopened, but the bus service across the city is still knackered. What an odd day!

Met Office say all of August's rainfall has come down in the last 48 hours.

Saw an article about that dam and possible evacuations earlier in the week Shugs. Glad to hear it's stopped raining for now at least.

It was ever thus. Anything outside the South East isn't worth reporting.

There has been serious flooding over here but nothing on National TV. The local news is much better.

This from the BBC NI site.....http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/foyle_and_west/7546339.stm
