It's going to be a close call, that's for sure. The -18.4C at Aviemore earlier this year is definitely under threat.

For me the main thing stopping Tulloch Bridge going much lower is how the big drop in temperature usually comes when the sun goes down - that drop has already taken place by the looks of things. How much lower can it get from this point onwards? Any historical comparisons?

EDIT - uh-oh, -14.7C at 7pm...

I think there's some cloud moving in up there, which could start pushing the temperature up again. Not ideal still calm clear conditions tonight it seems.

predicted lows of -16 degrees in the Highlands going from one or two posts this evening seem to be conservative - has tulloch bridge really already breached this figure?

It shows how quickly the Highlands can become very cold under clear skies deep snow cover and arctic air.

We are above freezing still here - it seems another world..

And at the other end of the country, some impressively low readings in Hampshire at 11pm, with -8C at Middle Wallop, -5C at Farnborough... and an unofficail -9C at Stratfield Mortimer up in Berkshire by 9pm.

Here in Yateley it's -5C too and the 7-8cm of snow cover has frozen rock solid.

I grew up in Farnham, just down the road from Farnborough, and it does get surprisingly cold at night there when the weather conditions are right. -6 at Odiham at 23:30, and down to -8 at Middle Wallop in Hampshire (between Andover and Salisbury).
