I was told by a county council guy that salt grit becomes inaffective below -3!

Thats quite possibly correct.

For it to be effective it would need to merge with any ice or water to lower its freezing point.

This just wont happen in heavy snow or severe frosts.

Some interesting looking clouds forming towards the north, over the 'high moor' there is precious little wind and temps falling again.

After struggling to get any higher than 1c its back down to 0.6c now with the DP flickering between -2/3c. I must say im very impressed by how cold its been today i though it was going to be at least 2-3c.

Hopefully -2/3c beckons again tonight with some wintry flurries whistling.gif

Headline:

Band of sleet and snow moving south.

This Evening and Tonight:

Band of sleet and snow moving south to southwest England, Wales, the Midlands and eastern England by the end of the night, with heavy snow showers following to Northern Ireland and north and east Scotland. Frosty in the southeast.

Tuesday:

Outbreaks of sleet and snow are expected to move slowly down into much of southern England through the day, and with some further snow affecting many northern and central parts.

I think I would even settle for half an inch, if we actually got some!!

GFS 12Z trickling out, it slows down developments, still gives the whole SW a few cms but then gives full 12 hrs of moderate snow for Wiltshire and Dorset in particular, stretching to Somerset and Gloucestershire giving 5-10cm by waking time Wed morning.

Then Wed morning the snow spreads back into Devon (still continuing in other areas).

Wed Lunchtime it's back to the whole of the SW cornwall to Dorset to gloucesteronionse.

What a fantastic 48 hr period. Snow totals of 20-30 cms in places, I can't believe the GFS will be right even within 48 hrs, again it will be interesting to seeif the NAE follows to produce further upgrades.

Amazing stuff from the 12z

Throws up a channel low of sorts (short wave) with plenty of snow right across the region

Very late trend from the GFS if this is going to verify

***** RED ALERT NAE IN SW SHUT DOWN ****

An Amazing METO Model out to 48 hrs is has a total of 20cm for me and for a few other parts of the SW.

The METO had better get some alerts out or it will be far too late.

Man this is getting confusing. So there could be snow tonight in parts of the SW. Then wednesday will bring snow to all parts. BBC has rain for this channel low in the west of the SW.
