Rainfall amounts will be around average, with the wettest weather favoured in western parts and some snow likely over the higher ground of northern UK, particularly in the colder spells. Sunshine amounts are also likely to be around or slightly above average in this rather changeable regime.

UK Outlook for Saturday 10 Dec 2011 to Saturday 24 Dec 2011:

The generally changeable westerly theme is likely to continue through the middle part of December, with spells of wet and windy weather separated by some drier interludes. Generally, rainfall amounts are expected to be around or a bit above average, meaning that western areas will on the whole see more rain than the east, although some rainy spells are likely for all parts. Sunshine hours should also be close to or slightly above normal, with eastern parts more likely to experience the best of the sun. In terms of temperatures, many places are likely to see a trend towards somewhat milder than average conditions, but this does not rule out some colder snaps and the chances of frost and hill snow will continue to increase later in the month.

UK Outlook for Saturday 17 Dec 2011 to Saturday 31 Dec 2011:

The largely unsettled weather looks set to continue through the end of the year across northern parts of the UK with strong winds and showers or longer spells of rain most likely here, as well as further snow over higher ground. Southern parts are likely see the best of the more settled conditions, but showers or outbreaks of rain are still likely here at times, as well as occasionally strong winds. Temperatures will be mostly around average, although southern areas may see above average temperatures, but some cold nights are still to be expected, with frost and fog developing. It is also likely that there will be some colder spells, chiefly across northern parts of the UK, with these bringing snow to lower levels here.

UK Outlook for Saturday 24 Dec 2011 to Saturday 7 Jan 2012:

Unsettled conditions should dominate the period with occasionally brisk westerly winds, as successive low pressure systems move in from the Atlantic, separated by drier, clearer and cooler interludes. Temperatures as a result should often be mild, or even very mild, for the time of year. However, this does not preclude some intervening colder spells between weather systems, with frost and fog as well as some snowfall, chiefly in the north. Precipitation amounts will be near-normal for much of the UK, but above in the far north, with snow most favoured on high ground here. Sunshine amounts will be around or slightly above average across the UK, with the east generally a little brighter.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole.
