What are the chances of seeing one or two white squares over the highlands of Scotland by the end of the week?

First post of the new winter season (I'm one of those posters that hibernate in summer). Very fitting that it should be to report some snow due for the Higlands this weekend.

Not getting the planks out just yet, although looking forward to a possible first frost in the garden this weekend.

Love this thread BTW - prompted me to get into gear and start snow watching again. Looking forward to watching the snow spread westwards as we move into the winter months.

Lakes and seas.

Big long yellow blob in the SE of Russia is lake Biakal - the world's deepest lake. Bit chilly there in the winter.

Even the shallow north of the Caspian sea is freezing over on that shot. That's quite impressive I would have thought.

Thanks for that, that's the whole rason I started it, it gives us a chance to actually SEE winter returning rather than speculating on when and where the first snow falls in the uk will be.

Sad but true, it's one of the first things I check at this time of the year before having my breakfast even :hi:

Been a good meltback in Siberia today, which is a shame because it puts us back to about avarage again...meh!

But there's a dusting in Alaska so it's not all doom and gloom.

Shouldn't Norway be doing a bit better? Probably early days, but I thought the past few years they received early snow. Great informative thread by the way.

I think on a weather forum, geeky habits are probably the norm! Sure I check ice extent before my morning cup of tea :yahoo:

I check this thread next though!

Anyway, back to the snow, there is one area that's had a decent increase, south east Russia, near the Northern Chinese border.

Apart from the Jotunheim range, much of Norway seems comparible to the conditions on the scotish highlands, so im not suprised to see little snow there in Sept.

I stayed just to the east of the range in late April 2009, and it had plenty of snow over 900meters (75-100cm's) , People there said that snow tends to arrive mid-late Ocotber.

The Jotunhiem main road had 10 foot walls of snow either side, not bad for the last week in April (but it is largely 1500+meters asl!)

Northern Hemisphere SeaIce area must be close to the minimum now,

Somewhat later this year though, compared to some previous years,

This graph shows how the Ice area min. has steadily shrunk especially since the last decade.

Will the downward trend continue?

Speculation by some "warmists" in recent times that it will -to the point of of nil Arctic Sea Ice in late Summer in the not too distant future.

Looking at the downward trend it`s an understandable view.

Where did you get those first 2 graphs Phil? Haven't seen them before...

Going by the IJIS data we gained nearly 70,000km2 yesterday, biggest increase since early March so we've definitely passed the minimum at this stage!

Sorry just lost my post whilst editing it.

Yes the actual area chart i posted was only up to 19/09.so your later figure is probably correct.

We should be on the up anytime now.

However here are the links to the sites with the graphs i refered to.

Lots of usefull charts and graphics on those sites, hope that helps.

Not sensitive enough to pick up the first (well second, as some fell in August) snow at Cairngorm.....

I suppose a dusting does not really warrant a pixel

Cool,

I suppose a pixel on that map must represent about 50mile x 50miles.. maybe slightly less?

Probably needs a little more snow for that to show up :)

My sense (haven't has time to look at past years, yet) is that the Siberian snow cover this September is running ahead of many recent years? Is that correct?
