UK Outlook for Tuesday 13 Dec 2011 to Thursday 22 Dec 2011:

The week ahead will be unsettled with rain or showers in all areas, though some brighter weather is possible in the east and southeast at times and perhaps the northeast later. The rain will sometimes be heavy on western hills, and the showers will be wintry from Wales northwards with a risk of hill snow, perhaps even down to low levels at times. Windy with a risk of gales, especially in the west and southwest later. Feeling cold in many places particularly in the wind, with overnight frost and icy patches likely, despite temperatures near average for the time of year. Similar conditions are likely to continue through into the following week, though perhaps a greater chance of some drier and more settled interludes developing.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 14 Dec 2011 to Friday 23 Dec 2011:

Generally unsettled, with successive low pressure systems passing eastwards near to or over the country, bringing a risk of gales or severe gales at times as well as heavy rain, peaking around the first Friday. Rain or showers will affect all areas at times, with the northeast perhaps seeing the best sunny spells. There is a risk of snow even to low levels on the north side of areas of low pressure, favouring, but not exclusive to, northern UK. It will feel cold, particularly given the strong wind, with overnight frost and icy patches likely in near or slightly below-average temperatures for mid-December. It will remain very unsettled towards the end of the period, with winds from the west or southwest favouring less unsettled, milder conditions across the UK.

UK Outlook for Thursday 15 Dec 2011 to Saturday 24 Dec 2011:

Starting very unsettled and stormy with a risk of exceptionally strong winds and potentially damaging gusts, perhaps even across parts of the south, this risk peaking around Friday 16th. This will be coupled with heavy rain which may bring flooding to some western areas, with snow an additional risk, especially in the north. It will remain broadly unsettled around the first weekend but generally turning colder, with occasionally wintry showers almost anywhere and a risk of some snow and ice. The unsettled theme looks like continuing into the second half of the period with a risk of heavy rain and gales, but this time mainly towards the northwest. The weather further south will sometimes be quieter, with a risk of frost.

UK Outlook for Monday 19 Dec 2011 to Wednesday 28 Dec 2011:

A largely dry start to next week with some wintry showers across eastern areas. However rain will soon spread in from the west for a time before some drier and settled weather moves into the south. Winds will also begin to moderate here giving the risk of fog by night. Northern parts of the UK, however will remain unsettled and windy with further showers or longer spells of rain, again wintry at times. Feeling rather cold at first but temperatures recovering across the UK to around average by mid-week. Going into the start of Christmas period we keep the north-south split across the country with a risk of some frost and fog overnight in the south, but the unsettled conditions in the north will slowly sink south across the country.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 20 Dec 2011 to Thursday 29 Dec 2011:

Far eastern parts of the UK may start cold and frosty but it will generally become much milder although quite dull and drizzly in many places. Northern parts of the country will stay changeable with strong winds or gales and spells of rain possible, these falling as snow over Scottish mountains. Southern parts of the UK should see the best of any dry weather but it is likely to be rather cloudy. Little change is expected through the Christmas period but unsettled and colder conditions may spread further south for a time. However, for most of the period, temperatures should be above normal, with the coldest spells in the north. Despite this there will still be a risk of overnight frosts.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 27 Dec 2011 to Thursday 5 Jan 2012:

Generally unsettled across northern and western parts to start with showers or longer spells of rain, occasionally heavy. Elsewhere, rather cloudy but mostly dry initially although it may turn more unsettled for a time across central parts during the first few days of the period. A drier and more settled spell is likely towards the end of December for most parts although it will only be short-lived in the north and west with unsettled conditions soon returning by the end of the month. This pattern will lead to generally mild and occasionally windy conditions although a more settled spell later next week may bring lower temperatures and an increased risk of overnight frosts for a time. Remaining generally unsettled into January with temperatures around normal.
