UK Outlook for Friday 30 Nov 2012 to Sunday 9 Dec 2012:

A mixture of sunshine and wintry showers at first. The showers mostly affecting eastern areas, with the west tending to see the best of the drier conditions. The heaviest showers will be towards the northeast, falling as snow over higher ground. Windy at times, with the risk of gales in exposure. It will be rather cold with a risk of overnight frost and icy patches. Becoming cold as we continue into December, with widespread overnight frosts. Further wintry showers, especially in the north and east, where accumulations over high ground are likely with snow perhaps falling to low levels. Also the potential for some more widespread outbreaks of rain, sleet and hill snow, especially towards the southwest.

Sounds like a battleground type of situation setting up towards the end of their forecast. In that situation there is plenty a chance for massive snow events to take place of which the eastern side of the country will be most the favored.

That sounds like a slider situation to me with the LP being pushed under the block

Agreed, could be interesting for Southern Counties come the first week of December. Also NE areas will do well from this set up come next weekend.

Not necessarily because in these set-ups the fronts don't always make it to the 'East'.

Clearly the METO see the potential for lowering of heights to the SW as some sort of Northern block is in place.

UK Outlook for Saturday 1 Dec 2012 to Monday 10 Dec 2012:

Wintry showers are expected to affect some eastern areas on Saturday with snow on hills, possibly to low levels in the north. Elsewhere, largely dry and fine, but cold with the risk of frost, icy patches and overnight freezing fog. By Sunday, rain may spread into the far west, preceded by snow, mainly over higher ground. There is a lot of uncertainty for the remainder of the period but it is likely that northern and eastern areas remain cold with wintry showers for some. Elsewhere, it will probably become milder, at least for a time, but also more unsettled, with rain and hill snow accompanied by stronger winds. Later in the period, colder but drier conditions may become re-established across the UK, with frost and icy patches for many.

UK Outlook for Sunday 2 Dec 2012 to Tuesday 11 Dec 2012:

Through Sunday, wintry showers are likely to affect some eastern parts but largely dry and sunny elsewhere. Later on Sunday and into Monday, rain may spread into western areas, preceded by some sleet or snow, mainly over higher ground. Rather cold with a frost and ice risk in many areas. There is greater uncertainty in the remainder of the period but it is likely northern and eastern areas remain cold with further wintry showers at times. Elsewhere, becoming milder for a time but also more unsettled and windy with heavy rain in places. Towards the end of the period, it is most likely that unsettled and cold conditions become established across Britain with snow possible, particularly over northern hills, although milder spells are possible in the south and west.

UK Outlook for Monday 3 Dec 2012 to Wednesday 12 Dec 2012:

The weather looks likely to be rather unsettled and cold during the first half of December. A band of rain will move east across the UK on Monday, and this may be heavy in places. There is a chance of snow as this rain runs into cold air lying across the British Isles, with this most likely over high ground. After this, the weather will probably stay unsettled with further showers or longer spells of rain, mainly in the west and northwest, but also affecting central and eastern parts at times. Some snow is possible, particularly over northern hills. It will be windy at times with a chance of gales. Temperatures will be rather cold, although some milder spells are possible in the south and west.

I think the wording of this latest forecast for next week is open to change. Note the phrases " chance of snow "& " snow is possible". Always difficult to forecast against a developing cold block near to the British Isles. Changes in the forecast are probable with-in the time scale of the next 72 hours. There is no doubt that a frontal trough will try to make headway later in the weekend with a fall of pressure again .. The predicted angle of the jet will make the projected progress of the front difficult to calculate post 72 hours.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 4 Dec 2012 to Thursday 13 Dec 2012:

Low pressure will probably remain across or close to the British Isles through much of the forecast period. As a result, the weather looks likely to stay rather unsettled and cold during the first half of December. Showers or longer spells of rain will affect many areas with a risk of some heavy rain in places. Snow is probable over high ground, especially in the north, and it may fall to lower levels at times. It will be windy at times with a chance of gales in exposed western and southwestern areas. As the wind will mainly be from the north or northwest, temperatures will be generally rather cold, with some frosty nights likely, although there may be some milder weather in the south for a time.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 5 Dec 2012 to Friday 14 Dec 2012:

The period should start breezy and cold, with widespread night-time frost, some ice and freezing fog. Sunshine and wintry showers are likely in the north and east where some snow is likely. Southern, central and western parts should be drier, although some rain, sleet and hill snow is possible for a time. The middle weekend will probably see winds ease in a drier but nevertheless cold interlude, with wintry showers dying out and an increased risk of freezing fog patches. Conditions becoming very uncertain to end the period, with colder-than-average weather likely to prevail, with frost and freezing fog more prevalent. Some wintry precipitation is likely, more so in the north and east, while the south and west are most likely to see rainfall, strong winds and milder interludes.

UK Outlook for Thursday 6 Dec 2012 to Saturday 15 Dec 2012:

The period should start cold, with widespread night-time frost, some ice and freezing fog. Sunshine and wintry showers are likely in the north and east where some snow is likely. Southern, central and western parts should be drier, although rain, sleet and hill snow is possible for a time. The middle weekend will probably start rather cold and unsettled with some showers, these showers wintry on hills and later to lower-levels, initially affecting the northwest and later the east and northeast. There is a trend towards the end of the period for conditions to become drier for the majority of the UK, with wintry showers probably becoming mainly confined to the north and east, while overnight frost and fog will become more prevalent generally.

Was hoping for a better update but I suppose they are being cautious, strange though because Ian Ferguson says from 6-15 days they favour an easterly becoming established with a potent Scandi block, hmmmm

UK Outlook for Sunday 9 Dec 2012 to Tuesday 18 Dec 2012:

Most areas fine and dry after a cold and frosty start on Sunday. However, milder, cloudier conditions with outbreaks of rain and drizzle are expected to gradually develop over northern and western extremes on Sunday and then spread into some other parts of the UK on Monday. During the rest of next week, some western and southwestern parts can expect further spells of rather cloudy conditions with some rain at times. Elsewhere many parts drier but tending to turn colder with an increasing risk of wintry showers developing over some eastern extremes from mid-week. Moving on into the following week, colder than average conditions with frosty nights are expected over most regions, though some milder interludes with rain likely towards the south and west.

well that should throw the model thread into deep despair, not that some are that far off already.

Doe's not fill me with much confidence i must admit. No mention of what wind direction we may be facing although them mentioning wintry showers to the east suggests maybe a easterly but weak in nature if it dont affect south eastern england.
