Long, sunny spells, 15C already.

9 out of 10 days this month have been sunny.

Could you really ask for much more than that?

Not in the central midlands it hasnt, month started chilly and foggy that took ages to clear, got cold last weekend with some heavy rain sunday, heavy rain wednesday and apart from thursday morning cloudy ever since.

Yeah, it's been a lot cloudier here too. Not cloudy really, it's been sunnier then average i'm sure with only 2 sunless days so far this month, but compared to other areas to my east and west it has been much cloudier.

Finally the weather forecasters started to say warm rather than mild now. :)

But why is high pressures always brought cloudy weather rather than sunny skies? I hate cloudy highs!!

A cloudy day was forecast here , but the sun broke through around 1pm and the afternoon was lovely and warm out of the wind..The BBC are forecasting a cloudy day here (west of the pennines)tomorrow, but looking at the METO radar the cloud seems to be coming from a N.E direction which should surely mean that west is best for brighter conditions

13°C today - not quite warm enough, but pleasant in the sun. I see Boulmer and Loftus were warmer at 16.1°C and 16.7°C respectively.

15.0C here at Cleadon today so not quite as high as Boulmer and Loftus, presumably the wind direction was more favourable for a fohn effect at those locations. It will be interesting to see how high the temperature can get. I recall that it got to 19C briefly around the back end of March 1998 here, with 17C reached in Marches 2005 and 2011, so those are the values to beat on my records. The southerly incursion of 16th-18th March 1990 (prior to when I began recording) was warmer though, as many parts of the region crept above the 20C mark.

Kinlochewe in north-west Scotland averages 894.3 hours of sunshine annually, making it, possibly, the cloudiest inhabited place on earth.

It reached 19.7C in that March 1990 spell here, which remains the record max to this day (since 1981 at least).

Today was 16.2C in the end, which is pretty impressive for the first half of the month.

It felt quite pleasant today so I was quite surprised to see that the temperature only reached 10°C here.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
