@edodfc

There is a thread dedicated to the short term synoptics here

http://forum.netweat...d/#entry2409142

So much to keep an eye on at the moment, I will try and get some charts up shortly.

Many thanks I am guilty of staying in the scottish comfort zone

You're welcome, I think that any other time the upcoming deluge would be hogging all the headlines. Right now the NH charts are ridiculous. Wonder if the GFS 18z is a mild outlier too? Inconceivable.. Time for the North Sea to crank up it's snow machine.

Wind and Rain charts attached from the NMM suite on NetWeather Extra, looks like the heavier stuff is reserved for other areas, core of wind gusts definitely south this time. Hurricane OnesScrotum perhaps.

Edit ; add info been following fergieweather updates on this in the South West Regional thread. latest update is that this squall line middle picture above as LEWP characteristics, a new one for me, link there is for wikipedia entry which also links to Derecho, some stunning imagery on that page.

Some ridiculous* charts from GFS 00z:

post-2844-0-56227500-1353565665_thumb.pn

Look at the high way up over Greenland and into the Arctic...

* ridiculous as in good, just in case I'm confusing anyone  We dream of these synoptics but to see them creeping closer to reality is something different. Some concerns over "will the upper air be cold enough" but let's not nit pick at this stage :good:

I was very confused as to why a few people were so gloomy on the model thread this morning; I hurried away to check the charts thinking there had been a big downgrade, but it's still looking great!

People need to realise that the details will not be firmed up until this weekend at the earliest and even then we'll only be able to tell what the first incursion of cold might bring.

So much to play for and bang on time for the start to hopefully an amazing Scottish Winter of 2012/2013! cold.gifScotland.gif

Weird reddish tinge to the sky here this morning. Seems to have the local shepherd concerned.

I was just coming on to say the same. I've taken a photo its not great quality but I'll try to upload later. I don't think I've seen it quite so red/pink before .

Same here SS. Had a look at some webcams throughout the highlands (west) and some are showing very wet conditions. Temp 9.6oC here but barometer falling rapidly - currently 994mbs. Dead flat calm at the moment.

Aye, looks like it's going to be a wet one for many.

Hmmn.... OTR & EDO look as if they are going to receive a soaking from that lot! Not really welcome in that area again I suppose. No doubt they will check in with their updates.

I had that eerie red light thing too but now it's yielded to the rain. Think the wind should peak here around 12pm with some 50+mph gusts, not quite January 3rd but still pretty blowy.

Charts look good again, at some point we had to move into the stage of the GFS trying to sabotage our cold by 1000 shortwaves. Don't take it that much more seriously than last night's pub run, it should work itself in the long run (there's rarely tar many shortwaves but usually one or two critical ones that can either make or break it) and there doesn't appear to be any danger to the block itself at the moment. As long as that's the case, ignore any doom and gloom posts

Well prepared for the expected wrist slitting LS! Rain stopped here at the moment but can see wind picking up now.

Sky like a mediaeval Doom Painting here earlier on! Gradual fade to bronzey-apricot-copper and I thought, "if it wasn't so mild, I'd say that looked like snow" - you know that odd colour some snowstorms have just before they drop?

Now blustery and spatter-rainy, with still a warm colour to the light.

Increased the knitting speed, just in case :D

Ooph! Curtains and stair-rods spring to mind! Couldn't take it being this heavy for too long without repercussions. No wind yet though.

Just look at that intense cold over Scandinavia, ready to make the hop across the N.Sea to Scotland!
