it's hardly the most thorough warning from MetO is it?

They won't commit heavily until tomorrow when they have an exact idea of where the front will be and at what timescales.

My stupid weather app is only showing moderate snow Friday only? It was showing more yesterday grrrr ........ Okay so I'm being greedy now lol

Ignore weather apps or any computer generated snapshots. Stick with the METO, the experts on here and the radar.

How can it snow with -2 uppers

As Liam says, the 850 are temps at 1.5 km up so not the be all and end all in this kind of situation, if you look at dew points (need to be below zoro) and the 850-1000hpa temps (lower layer) it gives a better idea

Even I cannot find a way this snow will not come off.

I'm pretty sure we are going to get a major dumping.. even here where we don't normally get it.

Also on Saturday night we could get -15 to -20

no Amber warnings as yet though that was being suggested by Ian Fergusson, however a massive upgrade this morning on all aspects. Surely this can't go totally belly up now!

Amber warnings out for a lot of the NW now!

yellow...im seeing amber warnings.....

just a word of warning about...weather apps....weather sites and even those little local graphics which the meto site does....they all give a very general guide....many are computer generated with no human input and often use very out of date info...basically they are useless in this sort of situation.......nobody knows what will happen least of all an iphone weather app.........

How can it snow with -2 uppers

In this situation milder air is aloft over the cold air at the surface, it's not the same rules as looking at a 'general' situation where uppers are -2, in which case you would expect rain.

Snow can fall in this set-up with -1 HPA and dam level around 532.

For once it looks like the entire region will see snow and significant accumulations, how many times can we say we've said that over the years.

Indeed pal, think 96? for a county wide frontal event!

Living in the Peak District i'm sure many will be taking this as a 'long weekend' given 36 hours out it's pretty much nailed on the head model-wise.

I don't think there will be as much as Feb 96 - that was a HUGE slow moving staller. On the morning of the event, the PPN had reached SW Scotland - Lancs coast and Wales and then took over 12 hours to get to me in North West Staffs.

It then snowed all day the next day (though increasingly lighter) to give around 7 inches, so you can see why there was such huge depths in a rough SW Scotland - Blackpool - Wrexham sort of line.

I'm thinking on the lines of 79' that was the last time we saw successive fronts bring snow to our region. This time next week we could be looking at some very impressive snow totals, for my locale I would say over a foot easily. RAMP! RAMP! RAMP!!!

it's the fronts that attack us thereafter Ian that will surpass that total I would say.
