Play at Roland Garros stopped ahead of a severe thunderstorm warning.

Not surprised! The odd strike annoyingly close to me now...a cirrus gathering, some convection clouds earlier..but...

A pretty magnificent thunderstorm just passed in Belgium. Certainly in the north of England or Scotland these can't happen more than a few times per decade although I imagine it's not too rare here.

You get used to them...but I could never tire of them or take them for granted. Madame Nature is so wonderful...

I know my clouds, but what is it when cirrus have little turrets at the leading edge? Not Ac cas...because that's what I've got almost out of nowhere...

Eindhoven sky cam - might want to mute it unless you understand Dutch.

Today has been the day that has made my mind up to make sure I head over to the continent on marginal plumes like this. The other side of the water nowadays is pretty much a guarantee for spectacular storms. I was so tempted to put in for an annual leave date for today at the beginning of the week, but the westward shift that was showing at the same time made me stay here and clutch at straws!... Big mistake! We can only learn from them at least. Happy for the Kentish people that did catch that decent one his morning anyway

Complete agree with this. It seems to be a rarity nowadays for continental plumes to deliver the goods here. It does happen, but it is that rare that us storm fans can normally rattle those very few dates out off the top of our heads. Since the start of 2013 - July 22nd/23rd 2013, June 9th 2014, July 17th-19th 2014. I realise the far SE of Kent may have had more but these are the three (yes three) widespread plume events over the last 2 years.

Now ask a storm nut from Holland to rattle off dates of storms - if they could they should be on Hollands Got Talent! :D

Anyone know the cheapest airports to land at in let's say belgium/france/Germany with a same day return in August time?

Probably Dusseldorf from Stansted. Check on www.skyscanner.com, it is quite useful for trying different dates and combinations.

Sorry, that's www.skyscanner.net

Guys the eurotunnel is a great option, even better if you can get a few other storm nuts to come with and share the cost.

Plus you'll have your own car to chase.

About £100 return and you can change the date at the last minute (if it looks like the storms are actually coming to the UK!)

Or Ferry over which is from £39 from Portsmouth.  (I did this recently for family purposes, but also added bonus of storm chasing)

Yes I agree with that. We need good conditions on the near continent to coincide with when people can be free. Like you, I wish I had booked that ferry to spend today over there. Still, there will be other opportunities.

Never a damn flash here and still 23c. I'm way too sunkissed (not burned) and it's too hot for anything other than a sheet for bed cover! I love this weather, but would love a storm even more...

Utterly still here in Limousin with just the chirping of "cigales" to break the warm silence. A perfect t-storm evening...if only!
