I'm certainly not feeling the cheer of some folks at the milder weather as it'll be accompanied by frequent periods of wet & windy weather bringing the possibility of yet more flooding!! Nothing good about that :( the ground is still saturated from the relentless rainfall so far this winter, very heavy rain this morning with instant water run off and standing water building up quickly in fields etc.... Tis not a good outlook!!

Simple logic here. How can the areas to the SSW of the UK be below average when the source of the airmass is from there? How can it be neutral in an area that seems to follow the coastal outline of the British Isles but suddenly become a positive anomaly what about 100 miles off the coast?

As Nouska mentions, the SST anomaly is a factor.

Also, it may be that cold air from eastern Canada and Greenland heads south into the area to the south-south-west of the UK, causing below-average temperatures there.  Meanwhile, that area is typically our warmest possible airmass source in winter, with average temperatures of around 15C, so one or two degrees down on the average won't stop it from bringing uneasonably warm weather to the UK.

Tonight's NOAA charts sums the situation up. LP to the north and HP to the south equals a strong zonal flow that weakens a tad later in the period with the cooler air being pushed a little north. Abandon hope all ye who enter here.

Unfortunately, my old memory banks can't get forget the complete contradictions of what Scott was saying a year or so back. I have posted on numerous sites for a number of years and I have never known a volte-face as big as this in a short space of time.

That is what annoys me. If you don't like a weather type or for that matter anything in life, then I have no issues but to say one thing one moment and then say something contradictory, a few months down the line without much justification for reasoning.

With all this heavy snow forecast in the reliable time frame across large parts of Eastern USA you can see the ECM,GFS has us too far west, sums this winter up:sorry:

Supporting chart attached.

I never understand why winter lovers get so aggitated whenever someone dares to say that they don't like cold and snow in winter. It's rather sad, if I'm honest...

We know their sad but what can you do ?

I never claimed I could do anything. I just think it's ridiculous that people get so defensive whenever someone dares to say they don't like a particular weather type.

My partner hates cold snow ice, etc

She thinks my lamp posting at 4am for flake of snow is crazy

There is a heavy bias towards cold on the forum but i guess its because its rarer then the standard rain and 8c

If rain was rare I'm sure there would be a bias towards that

I say live and let live

and if snow was as common as mild/wet, would we describe it as crap/equivalent of rain? maybe, certainly think I would

Come on guys? Isn't this all getting rather silly? I for one, will enjoy a few days' extremely mild weather, just as I would a few days' extreme cold...

The there's the other problem that's creeping-in; some folks get put on pedestals, only to be knocked down should their suggestions - far too-often taken as cast-iron promises - fail to happen...Get over it - no amount of wishful-thinking will ever alter the course of the weather. Neither in summer nor in winter!:D

Re.Preference for cold in model discussion probably has it,s roots in the long departed Snow watch forum that was a message board type of thing on the old BBC weather site.

Many of us older members used to hunt for cold charts just like many do now.Unfortunately it,s demise was hastened as much by increasing trolling as it was by the birth ofnewer more user friendly weather forums.
