Oh I am shocked to see old Pooley Bridge gone.

We were there in September, shopping and taking photos of Ullswater Lake.

I do feel so sorry for all affected by these awful floods.

Thanks for the pictures and info.

B.

Such a lovely area too, been to the central lakes many times especially around Pattersdale, Glenridding, and Ullswater area. It was only a year ago doing fell marshalling looking at the Pattersdale plain thinking to myself that it would take one heck of a rainstorm to fill the pastures. Hopefully it'll be a sunny-dry Spring for the tourists to reinvest the local economy and support the businesses affected.

One interesting thing i've heard about the effects of the rainfall, is that above Pattersdale is the popular Angle Tarn. So much water was dumped into the lake that the central islands were completed covered. From a overflight today it was estimated that the Tarn has increased almost triple of it's usual volume that it sustains.

The rain shadow effect is just extreme it seems at the minute. Massive differences between western slopes and the rest of us. Maybe just amplified because of the high totals and high moisture from the SW. The next week on the whole looks somewhat drier for most of us in the south. Even most of Wales doesn't look to have too much prolonged rain hence I think the Severn etc should be ok overall although 1 very wet day looks probable. No doubt records would be broken here too though if it had had Cumbrias amount too. It's Cumbria and environs that look to suffer most unfortunately still over the next week. Goes to show anything is possible unfortunately and no room for complacency. These waving fronts can sit over certain places for as long as they want, raising rainfall totals and rivers ever more.

Well sooner or later the brook would have undercut the road the rainfall speeded up somewhat.  Looks like the engineers never considered the possibility.
