Seems like these hundred year storms are happening every five years or so now.

It was expected to ease off come midnight still falling at an intensity very worrisome.

At least a once in a generation event IMO perhaps a once in a 50 year event or even 100 I'm not quite sure but it has been labelled 'unprecedented' by the professionals.

Some devastating images of flooding coming out of Cumbria tonight. I did say a few days back that I thought rainfall would be the biggest hazard with this storm- the GFS precipitation charts just had that 'look' about them....orographically enhanced rainfall effect on steroids! My thoughts are with everyone who is having to deal with this situation first hand!

Yes I have been watching rain today.co.uk and it's just hanging there. As above my thoughts are with the people who are having to endure this, stay safe. The difference down south is huge, no rain all day just gusty winds.

I thought the rainfall would have abated by now, seems relentless as the models are predicting. Slackenedd off somewhat before around 8ish but getting back from the local at half 1 and expecting to see the RADAR rain-free in the region. Its back to square one for them now.

According to a poster on the CUFC forum he spoke to the police not too long ago and they think it's only a matter of time before the bridge goes.

im still staggered by the height of the river in this photo. Imagine the weight behind that.

River Kent in Kendal now dropping a bit, top of railings visible again now.

Looks like the bridge survived, think there was a tree wedged under the west arch, made it look like the parapet had gone.

Some of the gauges in Carlisle are showing 15% above the 2005 levels, and its not due to peak for another 2 hours.

Still rising on http://www.gaugemap.co.uk/#!Detail/668/680

and 3.3m above the previous highest level of 4.6m.

Edit: just seen on the equivalent EA page that the previous value is from 2011, must be a new station since the last 1 in a 100 year event 6 years ago.

There's adverts on these webcams but some are quite good/useful

There appears to be a mattress washed against something in this webcam at Penrith.. http://www.farsondigitalwatercams.com/locations/penrith

and knowing what this looks like normally shows how high the Eden is, not far upstream from Carlisle: http://www.farsondigitalwatercams.com/locations/warwick-on-eden

Cockermouth: http://www.farsondigitalwatercams.com/locations/cockermouth

click 'view archive gallery' to compare with a normal image.

Devastating scenes overnight and emerging as day breaks, still many roads impassable either from standing water, flowing water or bridge closures due to fear of structural failure.

Some photos from around the county and water levels are still to peak in some locations.

The thing with these is it's useful to know when the station opened (2011 for that station), which is shown if you click more details

However even stations that opened before 2005 are well above their record levels.

The rain has stopped! Can see on the hill opposite me there has been a big landslide, I'm pretty sure it's just across fields and not affected any houses. That was some storm though and these big floods just keep getting worse.

341.40mm of rain at Honister if verified

That would smash the 24 hour UK record of 279mm.

Might be a while before the A591 past Keswick reopens after being washed away, landslides affecting some roads as well.

The road at Dunmail Raise has gone,  one of the Lakes most important link roads.
