Didn't we breach 300mm in Nov 2009 somewhere in Cumbria, Nick?

According to the official Met Office records, no:

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/climate-extremes/#?tab=climateExtremes

Although that 2009 event holds the 2/3/4 day records.

Edit: I now notice the note under the 24 hour record mentioning the "any 24 hour period" record, d'oh!

" The highest 24-hour total for any 24-hour period is 316.4 mm from 0000 to 2359 on 19th November 2009 at Seathwaite, Cumbria. "

I believe that 279mm is the record for an actual day

The 24 hour record is 316mm from Seathwaite in 2009

Patterdale to Glenridding road in bits too.

Looks like the Ullswater side really got ripped apart.

Either way, if that new figure is right, then that's still a decent jump to a new record. Insane rainfall up there.

The government's civil emergency committee, Cobra, is meeting today to discuss how to deal with the crisis caused by the flooding.

The WCML remains shut between Preston and Carlisle due to flooding the below pics were taken near Preston

Seen pictures of damage to the walls around the track in Carlisle odds are the track is going to be out of action for a while, as bound to be signalling equipment damaged like the last time.

Updated rain warning for Cumbria

Issued at: 1132 on Sun 6 Dec 2015

Valid from: 1700 on Mon 7 Dec 2015

Valid to: 0500 on Tue 8 Dec 2015

A spell of persistent rain, heavy at times, is expect to affect parts of Scotland, northwestern England and Wales from Monday late afternoon or early evening onwards into Monday night. Whilst this rain will neither be as heavy nor as prolonged as recent rain, please be aware that in view of the saturated nature of the ground and high river levels further localised flooding and disruption to transport is possible. This is an update to the warning issued on Saturday to adjust the timing of when the heaviest and most persistent rain occurs.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A cold front will start to move eastwards across the British Isles during Monday, finally clearing eastern and southeastern England on Tuesday. This front will bring with it several hours' worth of rain, heavy at times, to the area covered by this warning leading to rainfall totals of 20-30 mm quite widely over the higher ground here and locally close to 50 mm. Ahead of this cold front a shorter period with outbreaks of rain is expected early on Monday. It is important to note that Monday's rain will neither be as heavy nor as prolonged as recent rain.

Don't mean to be the bearer of bad news but the next week isn't looking good for areas already hit by major flooding issues, although totals aren't predicted to be as high in any 24hr period the daily totals could mount up, any amount of further rain given the last few days is very much unwelcome.... Could really do with a dry week or two but sadly not going to happen.

It will probably mean the Severn starts to go back up to peak levels also as Wales starts to pick up the rain again .

Such a massive disparity between the N and NW and the rest of England in rainfall levels.

Report of someone falling into the river Kent,  what on earth are they doing so close, wasting emergency services time.

I think cumbria crack has been subject to power loss,  no new feeds for over a  hour.

Its expected the West coast mainline north of Preston will remain closed on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th December due to flooding on the line. Lancaster station is also closed as it has no power

Anyone who normally uses Virgin Trains services between London Euston and Scotland can use Virgin Trains services on the east coast from London kings cross to Edinburgh then ScotRail services between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh or Cross Country trains services between Birmingham New Street and Edinburgh via Newcastle

Just heard on radio that Pooley Bridge has collapsed a short while ago.

River levels falling but still exceptionally high.
