Blimey. Hope everyone stays safe. I don't think anyone was quite expecting this.

Will the consensus from all this be that raising defenses lower downstream as a propagating effect upstream, where the river run-off is funnelled into these narrow heightened sections acting as a barrier for any further run-off upstream.

Excuse the quick sketch, but its just to simplify what i'm trying to say visually..

Wind really easing now after a calmer afternoon than expected. Possible that it will ramp up again as the evening goes on.

Thoughts with everyone in Cumbria, an unbelievable amount of rain has fell.

is it me because looking at the radar the rain seems to be finally easing for Cumbria?

Rain less extensive but still coming down heavy over the fells and there's only one way for the water to go...

Did they? Oops, completely missed that. Good work, models.

That's England's largest lake rising by a full metre. God knows what the rivers are like, especially in places like Cockermouth (which lies at a major confluence).

Cockermouth has all of its areas under Severe Flood Warning, so the Environment Agency realise they have a major issue, although really looks like a major issue for every river and stream in Cumbria.

The wind has started to be an issue in the eastern Borders, reports of roads closed due to trees down. Biggest issue this side of the Border remains the rain though :(

A few roads closed in Leeds today, including a local one near Sainsbury's due to wind damage. The Pennines are working their magic with the rain however so no issues with the wet stuff here.

The rain is easing from Cumbria but I fear that won't be it over for the night, sadly the damage has already been done and there will still be more water to flow down into the water catchments.

Could this be the end of the rain or will it pep up again

Hopefully! But I don't think that's the rain finished for the night though...

It wouldn't suprised me if we lost a bridge tonight. The Kent bridge in Kendal is currently acting as a stopper for water (its arches being full)and it is creating a pressure gradient which is being released every few seconds.

There's a couple on the Eden looking risky too.
